Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy
“This is my dream job. People in this profession will tell you that you are never supposed to let the administration know that you are at your final destination. I do not have a problem with that because I am just fired up to be at Oklahoma State.”
“What we (administration) have been able to accomplish here in the last few years, including Boone Pickens Stadium, has provided a great opportunity for coaches to come work here, and be a part of Oklahoma State University.”
On setting his coaching staff:
“I want to have enough coaches in place so that we can be on the road recruiting within a week. I have received numerous phone calls in the last couple of weeks from interested coaches who want to come and be a part of Oklahoma State. In our profession, the word has gotten out about how good a job this is here. I am not real concerned about my contract, but I want to make it real lucrative for the guys who come here.”
On keeping special teams and secondary coach Joe Deforest:
“I wanted to keep Joe (Deforest) because of his work ethic, his ability to coach special teams, the relationship with individuals he has on this staff and this team and his ability to recruit the state of Texas. Joe has been by my side from start to finish. He had mentioned to me a few times that he would like to stay in Stillwater when Les Miles' name came up for other coaching vacancies. He believes in what we are trying to do at Oklahoma State.”
On what he wants to do on offense:
“I want to hire an offensive coordinator, and I do not want to be involved in play calling on game day. Those responsibilities are going to be hard for me to give up. I am going to hire the guy that I feel like best fits the personnel, and the attitude of Oklahoma State University. I have some guys in mind, and I have a lot of coaches who have contacted me. We are going to get after them, we are going to be wide open and we are going to be exciting to watch.”
On his defensive staff:
“I want to hire somebody who is on the cutting edge of defensive football. That hire might take some more time because I am not a defensive-minded guy. Coach Deforest and myself will bring in people, and we will hire the guy that brings the style of play that we need to be successful. We are going to be exciting on that side of the ball. I want somebody who is energetic and I want somebody who will be fired up.”
