Kuncova Leads Cowgirls at Adidas Classic

LINCOLN, Neb. - Oklahoma State's Barbora Kuncova won two events to lead the Cowgirl track and field team at the Adidas Classic, on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

Kuncova, a junior from Doubravice, Czech Republic, won the mile run in a time of 4:52.30. The 3,000-meter race was close all the way to the finish line with Kuncova and Cowgirl freshman Mary Davies, as they both finished the race at the same time of 9:37.36. Kuncova was awarded the first-place medal; with Davies bring home second-place. Davies then had a fourth-place finish in mile run, with a time of 5:00.25.

“Barbora finished with some good times, especially with this meet being her first competition of the year,” head coach Rene Sepulveda said.

Senior Joanna Fedick took fourth-place in the 1,000-meter run, and set a personal record time of 1:25.40 in the event.

The Cowgirls then had good performances from two of their top freshmen, Kim Blomkvist and Eva Tomankova. Blomkvist had a fifth-place finish in the mile run as she was one of three Cowgirls that placed in the top five in that event. Tomankova, a freshman from Radinov, Czech Republic, had a third-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:57.90.

In the field events, Cowgirl senior Delisa McClain set a new school record in the weight throw for the second week in a row. McClain, a senior from Stillwater, Okla., won the event and broke the school record with a throw of 64-03.75(19.60 meters).

“With the performances Delisa has made this year, it should move her up nationally,” Sepulveda said.

Freshman Delinour Kirkpatrick also had a strong performance at the meet as she took fourth-place in the weight throw with a throw of 52-05.25(15.98 meters). She then had a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 43-06.00(13.26 meters).

Also for the Cowgirls, senior Paula Ogunbanjo finished second in the triple jump for the second week in a row, with a jump of 40-06.75(12.36 meters). Ogunbanjo's consistency this season has helped her in scoring for the Big 12.

The Cowgirls were without four potential Big 12 scorers at the meet, due to an illness that those girls had. Sepulveda said that he was happy how the meet turned out even though some girls weren't able to compete.

“The overall meet was a great for us going up against other Big 12 competition, even though we were without some of our top girls,” Sepulveda said. “We got to see the top team in the Big 12, Nebraska.”

The Cowgirls will return to action when they travel to two different meets next week. Part of the team will travel to the University of Washington Invitational at Seattle, Wash., and the others will travel to the Jayhawk Invitational at Lawrence, Kan. Both meets are two day events and will begin Friday, January 28. Times have yet to be announced.
