Cowboy Golf Claims Title At Ping/Golfweek Preview
September 28, 2004 | Cowboy Golf
Georgia Tech jumped into the lead during the final round, but the Cowboys came on strong down the stretch, playing the final four holes in 4-under to earn its first title at the event since 1998. OSU also won the inaugural tournament in 1989.
The fifth-ranked Cowboys entered the day with a three-shot lead over TCU and Georgia Tech before carding a 4-over 284 at Caves Valley Golf Club to finish with a 54-hole total of 848, 8-over, and outdistance the Yellow Jackets by four shots.
Freshman Pablo Martin led the way individually, recording birdies on two of his last three holes to wrap up medalist honors in his first collegiate outing. The Malaga, Spain native carded a final-round 71 en route to a 4-under 206 total and a two-stroke victory over Texas' Matt Rosenfeld.
The victory by Martin was the first by a Cowboy freshman since Edward Loar won two events (1996 Jerry Pate and 1997 Maxwell) during his first season and was OSU's first medalist since Hunter Mahan won The Maxwell in 2003.
Sophomore Tyler Leon posted his best round of the tournament with a 69 on Monday, giving him a 211 total and a tie for seventh place, while junior Zack Robinson followed up his second-round 68 with a closing 72 for a 5-over total of 215 and a tie for 16th place.
Sophomore Zac Reynolds moved up nine spots with a 72 to finish tied for 36th at 221 and senior Alex Norén rounded out the OSU lineup with a 222, 12-over total.
The Cowboys will resume their fall schedule on Oct. 11 when they attempt to defend their title at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
