August 30, 2004 | Cowboy Wrestling
Kelly went to overtime for the third consecutive match against Murtazaliev. There was a disputed call in overtime that would have given Murtazaliev the victory, but the American coaches appealed the ruling and it got overturned to send Kelly into the final match with a 3-1 victory.
Tedeev proved to be too much for Kelly in the finals. Tedeev won his fourth world championship with a 5-1 decision.
Daniel Cormier, 2001 NCAA runner-up for Oklahoma State, advanced out of Pool 7 in the 96 kg weight class. Cormier will receive a bye in the quarterfinals and will wrestle the winner of Russia's Khadjimourat Gatsalov and Alexandr Shemarov of Belarus in the semifinals. The semifinals will take place at 1:30 a.m. CDT.
Cormier had little trouble advancing out of a very tough pool. All three wrestlers were ranked in the top 10 in the world. Cormier, ranked fifth, defeated seventh-ranked Bartolomeij Bartnicki of Poland 10-1 and he shutout ninth-ranked Radovan Valach of Austria 9-0.
Eric Guerrero received the toughest draw of any of the American wrestlers. Guerrero had to face two wrestlers that both hold world medals. Guerrero lost to Oyunbileg Purevbattar of Mongolia 3-1 before losing to Georgia's David Pogosian 3-1 and failed to advance.
