Sam Mayes
July 29, 2004 | Cowboy Football
One of the veterans along Oklahoma States offensive line, Sam Mayes returns for his senior season and he could be in line for postseason honors. Mayes is big, strong and physical, and recognized as possessing the kind of talent that could very well take him to the next level. He returns in 2004 to anchor the offensive line and was listed as the starter at right guard coming out of the spring. Preseason publications have him listed as one of the top 10 linemen in the country. Mayes is a hardworking, extremely talented player who has overcome adversity to insert himself as a key player on the Cowboy offense.
2003: Mayes started in 12 of 13 games after starting all 13 games at right guard in 2002. He was out of the lineup for the first play of the game vs. Nebraska. He came in on the second play, however, and played the rest of the game.
2002: Mayes was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection his sophomore year. He made his 15th collegiate start against Southern Miss in the Houston Bowl, and started all 13 games at right guard.
2001: Sam started three games and saw action in four others. He started once at left tackle and twice at right tackle.
2000: His redshirt season at Oklahoma State.
High School: Oklahoma State went to Ohio for this outstanding prospect that got a lot of recruiting attention late. He had an outstanding career at Austintown Fitch High School for coach Brian Fedyski. One highlight of his senior season was a dominating performance against the defensive player of the year in Ohio. Mayes was credited with pancaking his opponent 15 times during the 1999 season. His postseason accolades included honorable mention All-State, all-district and All-Steel Valley. Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Indiana and Temple also recruited him.
Personal: Born April 15, 1982, in Fayetteville, N.C., Sam is the son of George and Deborah Mayes. His hobbies include weightlifting and video games. Sam is majoring in education at Oklahoma State.
