Four Cowboys Chosen In First Day of Baseball Draft
June 08, 2004 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla.-- Four Oklahoma State players were chosen in the first 18 rounds of the amateur baseball draft.
Josh Fields was selected in the first round by the Chicago White Sox and Jason Jaramillo was selected in the second round by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Junior ace southpaw Spencer Grogan was selected in the 10th round by the San Francisco Giants (310th pick), while Rod Allen was selected in the 12th round by the New York Yankees (369th pick).
Grogan, a Dick Howser Award semifinalist and second-team All-Big 12 pick, led the Cowboy pitching staff with a 12-3 record this season. He had seven complete games and led the conference with 131 innings pitched.
Allen, a senior transfer, hit .290 with 12 homers and 52 RBIs in his lone season in Stillwater. He led the Pokes in homers and also in stolen bases with 14.
All four players were drafted higher than they had been at any time in their playing careers. Fields was not drafted out of high school and Jaramillo was a 39th round pick in 2001. Grogan was a 19th round pick by the San Diego Padres in 2002, while Allen was selected in the 22nd round of last year's draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
