Medina, Prowse Qualify for NCAA Championships
June 04, 2004 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
Junior Valentina Medina qualified for the championships after placing second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:26.17. Medina's second place finish earned the Cowgirls eight team points for the regional.
Michelle Prowse was able to bounce back from an illness that forced her out of the Big 12 Championships to place fifth in the 5,000 meter run, which qualified her for the championships as well. Prowse's time of 17:25.10 was good enough for four team points.
“Michelle (Prowse) did an amazing job to get over her illness,” said head coach Rene Sepulveda. “We are very proud of her.”
The most improve performance for the Cowgirls during the weekend was done by junior Halee Prickett. Ranked 11th in the shot put heading into the weekend Prickett finished sixth, just one place shy of the championships qualifying mark. Prickett's distance of 15.23 meters marks her personal best in the shot put and was good enough for three team points.
Junior Paula Ogunbanjo missed the qualifying mark by one spot after finishing sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.78 meters, giving the Cowgirls three team points.
Junior Delisa McClain finished 10th in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.72 meters.
The Cowgirls finished the regional in 16th place out of 32 teams. The 18 team points earned by the Cowgirls placed them ahead of Big 12 Conference rivals Kansas, Colorado and Iowa State.
“We are very excited for the two girls that will be heading to the national championships,” said Sepulveda. “We are also very excited for next year with all five girls returning.”
The two qualifying Cowgirls will head to the NCAA Outdoor Championships beginning June 9 in Austin Texas.
