Former Cowboys Dominate Wrestling Nationals

Guerrero, a native of San Jose, Calif., and three-time NCAA champion at Oklahoma State, took the 60 kg/132 lbs freestyle division Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It was his fourth USA Wrestling national championship. He competed in his third World Championships last year in New York City, finishing 10th. He is currently the strength and conditioning coach for the Cowboys.
Kelly, who made his first U.S. World team a year ago, won his first USA Wrestling national championship Saturday, knocking off 2003 national champion Chris Bono in the 66 kg/145.5 freestyle division.
Cormier, who was an NCAA runner-up in 2001 for the Cowboys, won his second straight national title at 96 kg/211.5 lbs freestyle. He was fifth at last year's world championships.
The Olympic Trials begin with the challenge tournament at the RCA Dome May 21-22. Guerrero, Kelly and Cormier will face the winners of the challenge tournament in their respective weight class in a best of three series the following Sunday. The winners of the championship finals best-of-three-series earn spots on the U.S. Olympic Team.
The top eight finishers from this past weekend's national championships qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Other former Oklahoma State Cowboys to qualify for the Trials include Teague Moore, who finished third at 55 kg/121 lbs freestyle. Moore won the USA Wrestling National Championship in that division in 2002.
Champions from 18 weight classes (seven in Greco-Roman, seven in men's freestyle, four in women's freestyle) will earn a spot on the Olympic Team at the Trials and compete in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece Aug. 22-29.
