Cowboy Baseball To Play In Tallahassee Regional
May 31, 2004 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys will be the No. 2 seed, with host Florida State the No. 1, Central Florida No. 3 and Bethune Cookman No. 4.
Oklahoma State will face Central Florida in the opening game of the tournament on Friday, June 4 at 2 p.m. CT. Florida State and Bethune-Cookman will play the second game of the day at 6 p.m. CT.
“This is a tough regional and we are glad to be in.,” said head coach Frank Anderson. “Regardless of where we go we are excited about still playing. Central Florida has outstanding pitching and if our pitching can hang in there, it should be a pretty good matchup.”
Florida State won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament over the weekend and heads into the regional with a 42-20 record, having won 11 of its last 12 games.
Bethune-Cookman won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament and enters with a 27-26 record, while UCF received an at-large bid after going 44-16 this season.
The winner of this regional will face the winner of the Fayetteville Regional, hosted by No. 8 seed Arkansas.
This is OSU's 34th NCAA tournament berth and the first since the 2001 season. Only one current player, pitcher Daniel Rew, was on that team.
This will be the Cowboys first regional appearance in Tallahassee and it also marks the farthest east the team has had to travel for an NCAA regional. The Pokes traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., in 1995 and to Starkville, Miss., in 1987.
Oklahoma State has three players from Florida: ace southpaw Spencer Grogan (Cantonement, Fla.), starting shortstop Chris Gutierrez (Orlando, Fla.) and pitcher DeWayne Carver (Newberry, Fla.).
