Cowboy Golf Slips Into Second Place At NCAA Central Regional
May 24, 2004 | Cowboy Golf
After enduring a 55-minute weather delay in the midst of their front nine, OSU's fivesome got off to a slow start, turning at 18-over par, collectively, before regrouping with a 6-over effort on the inward nine.
"When the winds get going, it's a very difficult golf course,” Cowboy head coach Mike Holder said. “This course is a great test and if you are off just a little bit then you are trouble. We didn't have a single guy step up and have a good round today. We didn't have anyone do what we did yesterday and attack the course."
The Cowboys will enter tomorrow morning's final round two shots off the pace of tournament leader Kentucky after the Wildcats carded a 3-under-par 285 team score to move up from fourth place.
Tied for first place after an opening-round 69, freshman Casey Wittenberg ended the day with a 74 and will enter his final 18 holes in a three-way tie for third and two strokes behind the Wildcats' Brandon Waldrop in the individual race.
“The little rain we had made it play a lot longer. With the delay, it's always tough to stop in the middle of the round and then have to continue,” Wittenberg said. “I didn't really play that badly, it's just that the golf course played really hard. The pin placements are very tough and I didn't give myself a chance for a lot of birdies."
Fellow freshman Tyler Leon posted the squad's best score of the day with a 1-over 73 to move up from a tie for 17th into a deadlock for the eighth spot at 146, 4-over.
Junior Alex Norén dipped from a tie for fourth into a tie for 15th after following a 70 on Thursday with a second-round 77, while sophomore Zack Robinson shaved two shots off his first-round total with a 74 move up 15 spots into a tie for 30th place at 150.
Sophomore Chris Clarke rounded out the OSU lineup with an 80 to end play tied for 70th place at 155.
The Cowboys will begin its final round at the par-72, 7259-yard layout at 7:12 a.m. and will be paired with Kentucky and Texas.
