Oklahoma State Outlasts Oklahoma 6-5 In 13 Innings
May 02, 2004 | Cowboy Baseball
With the win, the Cowboys captured the season series for the first time since 2001 and improved to 29-14 overall and 12-4 in league play. The Sooners dropped their fourth straight conference game and fell to 27-18 on the year and 13-7 in league action.
“That was an unbelievable game, the emotion, the heartache and the different things that happened,” said first-year head coach Frank Anderson. “It's a cliché but you hate to see somebody lose that game because both sides fought that thing until the end. It was like a basketball game going back and forth.”
OU rallied from a two-run deficit in both the ninth and 10th innings, before the Cowboys finally put them away in the 13th.
With the game tied at 5-5, Jason Jaramillo led off the 13th frame with a double off of the right field wall and advanced to third on a bunt single by Scott Kirby. Mario Matulich then grounded into a double play that allowed Jaramillo to score the winning run.
Scott Richmond (2-0) pitched the final 4.1 innings to pick up his second win of the series. The junior righthander gave up two unearned runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts and has not allowed an earned run in 8.2 innings this weekend.
Daniel McCutchen (3-3) took the loss for the Sooners, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work.
OU took a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI single by second baseman Russell Raley.
The Pokes were held scoreless through the first six innings by Sooner starter David Purcey before breaking through in the seventh. Three consecutive one-out base hits by Jason Jaramillo, Scott Kirby and Mario Matulich plated one run, while Rod Allen added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.
Matulich would add another RBI single in the ninth to extend the lead to 3-1, but the Cowboys and Spencer Grogan could not close it out. OU scored two runs, the first on a sacrifice fly by Ole Sheldon and another on a two-out single by pinch-hitter Ryan Mottern to tie the game.
Grogan was an out from pitching his fifth consecutive game before leaving with two outs in the ninth. He allowed three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks in the no decision.
OSU scored two more runs in the 10th on a RBI single by Ty Wright and a RBI double by Jason Jaramillo.
The Cowboys appeared to have the game in hand when Ryan Rohlinger hit a two-out fly ball to left-center that leftfielder Scott Kirby dropped allowing Russell Raley to score from first base. Rohlinger who advanced to second on the throw home, then scored on a RBI single by Ole Sheldon to tie the game up at 5-5.
Jason Jaramillo, Scott Kirby and Mario Matulich paced the Pokes with three hits apiece, while Russell Raley led OU with three hits in the game.
