Oklahoma State Pounds Kansas 14-4
April 18, 2004 | Cowboy Baseball
OSU claimed the series victory and improved to 23-13 and 6-4 in the Big 12, while Kansas dropped to 24-18-1 and 2-9 in conference play.
The Jayhawks scored two unearned runs on a two-run single by Travis Metcalf to open the game with a 2-0 lead before Oklahoma State responded in big fashion.
Every Cowboy starter scored in the first inning, with Rod Allen and Keanon Simon having two-run singles in the stanza. The nine runs scored were the most the Pokes have scored in an inning this season, surpassing the eight scored against Louisiana Tech, also in the first inning, on March 14.
OSU scored a run in the third on a passed ball to extend the lead to 10-2.
Kansas added a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Andy Scholl and another in the fifth on a solo homer by Sean Richardson.
Spencer Grogan went the distance for the third straight game, and fourth time in five starts, to improve to a Big 12 leading 9-1 on the year. He allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk to improve to 4-0 in league play.
Rod Allen hit a solo homer in the fourth, his sixth round-tripper of the year, and finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Mario Matulich added a two-run double in the fifth to extend the OSU lead to 13-4. Thomas Incaviglia added a sacrifice fly RBI in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Rusty Ryal, Jason Jaramillo and Keanon Simon each had two hits on the day to help lead the offensive attack.
The teams will close out the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
