Oklahoma State Topples Kansas 5-4
April 17, 2004 | Cowboy Baseball
OSU improved to 22-13 and 5-4 in the Big 12, while Kansas dropped to 24-17-1 and 2-8 in conference play.
Josh Fields went 3-for-3 at the plate with a solo homerun and Scott Kirby hit a three-run shot.
Jared Schweitzer went 3-for-4 with a double and a homerun for the Jayhawks.
The Cowboys grabbed a three run lead in the bottom of the first. Scott Kirby drove in three runs with his fifth homerun of the season that cleared the left field wall.
Travis Metcalf answered for Kansas with a two-run shot in the top of the second.
Kansas tied the game at three when Rusty Ryal misplayed an in between hop off of the bat of Kyle Kilgo that allowed Schweitzer to score from second base.
Josh Fields staked the Cowboys to a one run lead with a solo homerun to lead off the sixth inning.
Thomas Wright chased Ryan Knippschild from the game in the eighth with leadoff double down the line. Fields followed with a single off of Don Czyz and Jason Jaramillo walked to load the bases. Wright was forced out at the plate, but the Cowboys were able to add the insurance run when Fields came across on a wild pitch.
Schweitzer added a solo homerun in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as Cowley struck out Kilgo to end the game.
The series will resume tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Southpaw Spencer Grogan is slated to get the start on the mound for the Cowboys and will be opposed by right-hander Chris Smart.
