Offense, Defense and Special Teams Shine in Final Scrimmage
April 12, 2004 | Cowboy Football
With temperatures hovering in the upper forties and a light rain falling most of the day, the Cowboys sailed through their final spring workout and had outstanding performances on both sides of the ball and on special teams.
On the offensive side, freshman quarterback Bobby Reid completed seven of 13 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns. His touchdown passes included a 30-yard strike to Eric Allen, and two to D'Juan Woods.
D'Juan Woods was the leading receiver on the day with six catches for 84 yards and the three touchdowns. Two of his three touchdown receptions were thrown by his brother Donovan who completed seven of 10 for 89 yards.
“I thought this was our best offensive day of the spring,” said fourth year head coach Les Miles after the 100-play workout. “It was a productive day and a productive spring. We accomplished the things in all three phases that we needed to accomplish.”
On the defensive side, Roderick Johnson was unofficially credited with six tackles while Jamar Ransom had nine tackles, including one for minus yardage. Clay Coe, a returning starter on the defensive line had a quarterback sack and linebacker Victor DeGrate had seven tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage. OSU's first team defense didn't allow a score during the two hour scrimmage.
Special teams also produced its share of shining moments during the final spring scrimmage. One of several long kick returns was a 96-yard return for a touchdown by Robert Jones.
With spring drills now completed, the Cowboys will focus on the remainder of the academic semester and the off season conditioning program that will lead up to August and two-a-day workouts prior to the Sept. 4 opener at the Rose Bowl against UCLA.
