Casey Wittenberg Named To U.S. Palmer Cup Squad
April 12, 2004 | Cowboy Golf
The Memphis, Tenn., native is the sixth Cowboy player to be selected for the tournament and the third in the last three years. Wittenberg joins Hunter Mahan, who competed in 2002 for the American squad, and current teammate Pär Nilsson, who played as a member of the European team last year. In 1997, Bo Van Pelt took part in the event, while Charles Howell and Edward Loar participated in 1999.
Runner-up at last summer's U.S. Amateur and a member of the 2003 Walker Cup team, Wittenberg has been the Cowboys' top finisher in four tournaments this season and has posted three top-10 showings. He was one of 34 men's collegiate golfers named to The Ben Hogan Award Watch List.
Wittenberg joined Tiger Woods to become only the second player to achieve the No. 1 ranking in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings in the summer of 2003 after winning the Southern Amateur and Porter Cup and finishing runner-up at the Monroe Invitational, Azalea Amateur and North-South Amateur.
The U.S. team leads the Palmer Cup Series against the European squad, 4-2-1.
