OSU trailed 6-1 heading into the eighth before putting up three runs to cut the lead to 6-4. UT was able to hold off the rally and added two runs in the ninth to snap the Cowboys four-game winning streak.
Rod Allen led off the eighth with a solo homer to left off of Longhorn starter J.P Howell. The Pokes added two more runs to cut the lead to 6-4, but could not get any closer.
Howell gave up a season-high four earned runs on six hits in seven innings of work with eight strikeouts and three walks to improve to 6-1 on the year. J. Brent Cox pitched the final two innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Thomas Cowley (0-1), in his second career start for the Cowboys, gave up five runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work with a walk and five strikeouts.
Allen led the Pokes with two hits and two runs scored, while Michael Hollimon finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Longhorns.
OSU scored a run with the bases loaded on a wild pitch by J.P. Howell in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Longhorns got it back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Hollimon.
The teams will be back in action in the second game of the series tomorrow at
