March 14, 2004 | Cowboy Baseball
The Bulldogs evened the series with the win and improved to 9-12 with the win, while
OSU had a 6-3 lead after four innings, but Tech rallied with a run in both the fifth and seventh innings, before going ahead with a three-run eighth. Shortstop Gary Holik had a two run double in the eighth and finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored.
The Cowboys cut the Tech lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by Rod Allen, but failed to tie it in the ninth with a runner on second and one out as Scott Kirby fouled out and Mario Matulich flied to right to end the game.
Reliever Andrew Alsup scattered nine hits in 5.2 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, to win his first game of the year. Cowboy reliever John Forrest took the loss to drop to 1-1. The Cowboy pitching staff as a whole gave up eight runs, but just two were earned.
Rod Allen led the Pokes with his second straight 4-for-5 day with two RBIs, while Jason Jaramillo added three hits in the losing effort.
Scott Kirby went 0-for-5 and saw his hitting streak end at 17 games.
Louisiana Tech took advantage of two OSU errors to plate three unearned runs in the top of the first off of Cowboy starter DeWayne Carver.
Gary Holik and centerfielder Jeremy Alford both had RBI singles in the inning to help stake the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead.
The Cowboys cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first coming via a two-run single by first baseman Ty Wright. OSU took the lead in the second with three runs, two coming on a single by second baseman Rusty Ryal.
Rod Allen added a solo homer in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-3. Jeremy Alford had a RBI double off of Carver in the fifth to cut the OSU lead to 6-4. Reliever John Forrest came in with two men on and one out and retired the next two batters to stop the Tech scoring threat.
The Cowboys and the Bulldogs will close out the three game series tomorrow at
