Coach Miles Signing Day Quotes

On the small class
“We are bound by very finite number of scholarships. The number was not as large as it could have been in other years. We came down to the back end on some great players and to this point, some of those guys fell in other peoples basket.”
On Robert Reid
“Robert Reid gives you the opportunity to have a dual-threat at quarterback. He is a tremendous athlete. A six-foot three, 225 pound guy, who can run a 10.6 or 10.7, 100 meter guy with quick feet. He throws the ball very well. We get him into our class and get him into our football, he will do well.”
On Nathan Peterson
“Nathan Peterson was a key part of the class, based on the fact that he comes in at defensive end, where we graduated two starters and our first sub. He'll come in with talent and ability, and a full spring before two-a-day practices to allow him to compete for the job. He was a very necessary part of the class.”
On Prentiss Elliot
“Prentiss Elliot has as much big-play potential as any number of people that I've seen through years of recruiting. He could play corner, tailback or wide receiver. He'll return punts as well. he is a tremendous threat.”
On David Washington
“He's very mobile. At 250 pounds and six-foot two, he can slam a basketball. He has great athleticism for the position that he will play in the offensive line. In years to come he will be 285-290 pound mobile linemen with great athleticism. He's the kind of interior linemen that we are looking for.
On Mike Hamilton
“When you go in there with the tradition that we have at tailback, with Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, David Thompson, and with an All Big 12 tailback graduating, it presents an ideal circumstance for a guy who wants to carry the ball in the “I” (formation) and he does. He's probably only six-feet tall but he appears taller and he is 220 pounds and thin looking. He could be a 230 or 240 pound guy that is an elusive big man. He'll take time to develop like the rest of our class, but his potential is very great.”
On Martel Van Zandt
“I was involved in Martel's recruitment, much like any head coach would be. I had a real comfort with him in the fact that my brother is deaf and I understood some of the things that he would have gone through. We are thrilled to have a big six-foot one corner with great speed and a real comfort in the secondary. He will present a challenge in supporting him, but he will give to this team an experience that they may never again get. I didn't think his hearing impairment would be a barrier to playing on the defensive side of the ball.”
On the improved recruiting classes
“I'm certain these classes over the last two years have been the style of classes that will allow us to compete with advantage in the Big 12 Conference. They have also allowed us to have opportunities at some of the very finest players in the country, some of which we got, and some of which went to other schools. When you are in that fight, you do have your share fall towards us and it makes a difference in a really good class and a great class. The more success you have, the more success you are going to have. That's true on the football field with victories, and it's true in recruiting.”
