Lewis Named Big 12 Wrestler of Week
February 17, 2004 | Cowboy Wrestling
Oklahoma State's wrestling team earned its fourth conference honor of the year when Tyrone Lewis was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for the period of Feb. 9-15, the league announced Monday.
Lewis led the Cowboys to a 25-12 routing of seventh-ranked Lehigh last Sunday. OSU is now 17-1 overall this season.
Against the Mountain Hawks, OSU won seven out of the 10 bouts, including Lewis' victory in the highly anticipated matchup at 165 pounds where he faced top-ranked Troy Letters in a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinal round.
Second-ranked Lewis prevailed with an 8-5 win over Letters in a hard-fought match, to avenge the loss from the 2003 NCAA Championships. The El Reno, Okla., native recorded a takedown in the first period to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Lewis then scored a reversal and a pair of back points to extend his lead to 6-2 after a Letters escape. The three-time All-American held on to take the match and remain undefeated on the year.
With the win, Lewis improved to 28-0 on the year.
OSU ends its regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. tilt against Minnesota in Stillwater, Okla.
