Cowboys down Samford, 65-50
January 05, 2004 | Cowboy Basketball
Allen scored his game-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals in just 26 minutes. Joey Graham, starting his second game for the Pokes, scored 15 on 7-of-9 shooting.
Samford jumped out to an early nine-point lead on back-to-back-to-back treys to start the contest. J. Robert Merritt, an Oklahoma City Bishop McGuinness product, scored six of his nine points in the first 2-1/2 minutes of the game. However, by the 12-minute mark of the first half, the Cowboys had tied the game at 13-13.
After a back and forth end to the first period and OSU leading, 29-26, at intermission, the Cowboys went on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to increase their lead to 12. A three by Randall Gulina cut the lead to nine before OSU went on a 13-0 run to give the Pokes their biggest lead the game.
Both teams shot poorly from the free-throw line as OSU shot just 40 percent (6-of-15) from the charity stripe and Samford shot a dismal 4-of-12 from the line. However, long-range shooting kept the Bulldogs in the game as they scored 30 of their 50 points from beyond the arc.
Stephen Graham had one of his most productive games of the season, scoring four points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out a game-high five assists.
Oklahoma State (8-1) will play the SMU Mustangs on Saturday evening in the second game of the Touchtone Energy All-College Classic at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPN.
