September 04, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
Oklahoma State is on the road for second straight week, visiting Sam Houston State and Northwestern State before its home opener at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex on Sept. 12.
The Cowgirls will square off against SHSU at 7 p.m. for the first time in program history and wrap up the road swing with NSU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Sam Houston State is 1-1 in its inaugural year of soccer. The Bearkats lost to SMU, 10-1, on Friday but rebounded with a 17-0 win over Texas Southern on Sunday where they outshot the visitors 69-1. Three Bearkats; Rynice Friday, Liz McDonald, and Adriana Harris, have three goals each.
Northwestern State enters the weekend 0-2 after falling to Georgia Southern, 2-0, and Mercer, 1-0. All three goals given up by NSU were in the second period, with Mercer's game-winner coming in the final three minutes.
The Cowgirls lead the series with NSU 2-0. Both wins over the Lady Demons have been shutouts, the most recent a 13-0 blanking in 1997.
Week In Review
Oklahoma State's soccer squad opened the 2003 season with a shutout of Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky.
Jere Boykin opened the Cowgirl scoring with an unassisted goal at 25:04.
Shortly after the goal both teams were called from the field due to lightning in the area and after a 90 minute delay the game was resumed.
The break sparked the Cowgirls as Boykin, along with Joanne Edwards, assisted Adriane Radtke at the 33:15 mark to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 halftime lead.
Ashlyn Brantley opened the second half scoring by taking an assist from Edwards at 55:10. Jolene Schweitzer capped off the game with a goal at 72:21 on an assist from Kim Graves.
Kathrin Lehman started the contest in net and registered one save. Erin Corbin completed the shutout by playing the final 28 minutes and also registering one save.
The Cowgirls improved to 2-0 on the season with their second shutout in as many outings, defeating Arkansas-Little Rock, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Burns Park Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead when Nikki Wojtowicz converted a penalty kick 36 minutes into the contest. The slim advantage held throughout the first half as the Cowgirls were not able to score again despite outshooting the Trojans nine-to-one in the first period.
The second half was a different story as the duo of Adriane Radtke and Cassie Lewis took over, finding the back of the net twice in the first 10 minutes of play.
Lewis pushed the advantage to 2-0 at the 52:09 mark on an assist from Radtke. The roles were then switched two minutes later when Lewis found Radtke on the right side, giving the freshman her second goal of the weekend.
The final goal came when UALR headed in a corner from Wojtowicz for an own goal.
Kathrin Lehmann and Erin Corbin once again combined for the shutout in net. Lehmann earned the start and played the first 63 minutes before Corbin came in to close out the contest.
