2002: In his first year in the starting lineup, Gruenwald began the year by tallying a 19-2 record before finishing the year with a 23-14 mark. Gruenwald defeated Oklahoma's Tom Grossman, 3-1, in Stillwater, helping the Cowboys to an 18-15 victory. He went undefeated at the Lone Star Duals, and went into Iowa City, Iowa, and pinned Ryan Fulsaas in 3:34, propelling the Cowboys to a 21-15 victory. Earned a wildcard bid to the NCAA Championships, where he posted a 2-2 mark.
2001: Wrestled in 15 matches as a Cowboy, including one dual match where he won by forfeit. Posted 12 wins against three losses. Among his wins, he recorded four falls and two major decisions. 2000: Gruenwald split time between the 285- and 197-pound weight class in 2000. He redshirted as a true freshman and posted a 8-6 record wrestling unattached. However, after making the move to 197 pounds, Gruenwald went 6-2. His most impressive outing came at the Fort Hays State Open, where he swept through four opponents and walked away with the title at 197 pounds. Gruenwald also turned in a fifth-place finish at the Great Plains Open.
High School: Gruenwald came to Oklahoma State from coach Rick Reeves' program at Skiatook, where he won three state titles, finished runner-up his freshman year and posted a 126-9 career record for the Bulldogs. Following his senior season in 1999, he was named the Oklahoma Class 3A Outstanding Wrestler. Gruenwald was a member of the Pittsburgh Classic Team and was also a four-year letterman in football.
Personal: Willie is the son of Dale and Patty Gruenwald and has two sisters, Crystal and Karlee. He enjoys fishing and hunting in his spare time. Gruenwald is majoring in ???? at Oklahoma State. He and his wife, Brooke, have a daughter named He was born Sept. 12, 1980.
