Cowgirls finish third at JK Kornelson Classic
September 11, 2003 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
The Cowgirls finished third behind Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State in their second competition of the season. It was the team's first 5K meet.
McVey led the Cowgirls for the second consecutive week after making a charge late in the race. Katie Kelly finished 13th and Maria Trejo finished 18th.
'I have a really strong finish. It's easier for me to come from behind and finish strong,' McVey said. 'There was a big difference from last week's race with the mud and such - I thought it was a little easier but then there were more hills.'
After failing to break the top 15 in last week's meet in Tulsa, Kelly was the team's second highest finisher.
'You can tell she's starting to get it in shape,' Cowgirl head coach Rene Sepulveda said. 'It's just a matter of getting in more races. She works real hard and eventually in a few weeks she's going to get that race feeling back in her. Each week I've noticed she's really improved. Really, pretty much everyone improved a lot.'
Trejo, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, has finished as one of the team's top five performers in each of the team's meets this season.
'In training she's been in the top training group with Jodi and Katie,' Sepulveda said. 'This week she did a really good job and for a freshman we're really impressed with her.'
Saturday's meet marked the first 5K finishes for Svetlana Vasileva (20th) and Alison Erziner (24th). Freshman Daryl Round (injury) was a race time scratch.
The Cowgirls will not compete for the next three weeks, but return to action October 4 when they host the Cowboy Jamboree.
