Sam Mayes Q&A
August 21, 2003 | Cowboy Football
Sam Mayes: I'm just excited to get out of two-a-days, to tell you the truth. I'm excited to prepare for Nebraska. Right now, we just stick the whole offense in and work stuff out. We really don't have a set plan for Nebraska yet, although I'm sure the coaches do. I'm excited to get the plan down and start working on them.
Cowboy MVP: What have been your goals during summer workouts with the team?
Sam Mayes: I think everyone has done a pretty good job this summer by themselves. I really didn't have to push anyone to get the job done as far as working hard in the weight room.
Cowboy MVP: What are your goals for this season?
Sam Mayes: Our team goal is to win the national championship. I'm sure everyone in college football has that goal right now. For my individual goal, I just want to get better than I was last year. Last year, I was all-conference honorable mention. This year I want to be first-team and maybe get some All-American votes. We'll see what happens.
Cowboy MVP: What did you take away from last season and how will that help you this season?
Sam Mayes: We're hungry now. It's like a shark with blood in the water. We've tasted winning, now we have to go finish it off.
Cowboy MVP: What players do you think will surprise people this fall?
Sam Mayes: Brad Girtman, Corey Hilliard, Chijuan Mack, Ricky Coxeff, and Tommy Devereaux.
Cowboy MVP: Do you model yourself after any other player?
Sam Mayes: I try to pattern myself after my father, I guess. He was an All-American nose guard at West Point. My dad's attitude it kill or be killed.
Cowboy MVP: Do you have any pregame superstitions?
Sam Mayes: No, I really don't. I just have a set pattern of stuff that I do, as far as putting clothes on and getting to the training room. I have that pattern, but no superstitions.
Cowboy MVP: If you were in charge of college football for a day, what would you change?
Sam Mayes: We would have a players' association and we would get paid.
Cowboy MVP: What are your hobbies when you're not playing football?
Sam Mayes: I don't really have any hobbies off the field. I just kind of sit on the couch and hang out.
Cowboy MVP: Who is your craziest roommate?
Sam Mayes: Ben Buie. There's never a dull moment at my house. He's always doing something off the wall. He's lucky he's made it this far in college.
Cowboy MVP: Who do you like to room with on road games?
Sam Mayes: Ben Buie or Kellen Davis, one of those two.
