Cowboys Go Through Major Scrimmage
August 18, 2003 | Cowboy Football
Working in near-100 degree temperatures, the Cowboys spent nearly three hours on the practice field. The Pokes worked on all phases during the workout, including substantial time on special teams play. Prior to Saturday's scrimmage, the Associated Press released its preseason Top 25 and the Cowboys came in at number 24. OSU is ranked in both major preseason Top 25 polls for the first time since 1985.
After Saturday's workout, Head Coach Les Miles said it was a productive afternoon. "I thought we accomplished what we needed to accomplish today," Miles said. "The scrimmage also showed us the areas we need to focus on as we go into the next two weeks."
OSU's offensive stars were familiar. Junior quarterback Josh Fields completed 10-of-15 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns. One of his four touchdowns went to All-American receiver Rashaun Woods who had four catches for 70 yards on the afternoon, including the 40-yard touchdown catch.
Tailback Seymore Shaw led the OSU ground game with 11 carries for 58 yards. Greg Jones has nine carries for 35 yards and Greg Gold added 10 carries for 24 yards.
On the defensive side, defensive back Vernon Grant had four tackles and the only interception of the scrimmage. Jamar Ransom had five tackles, including a sack and an additional tackle for loss.
With two-a-day workouts completed, the Cowboys will practice once Sunday before taking Monday off and resuming preseason workouts Tuesday afternoon. All of OSU's remaining preseason workouts are closed to the public.
