Cowboy Baseball Falls To Cal State Northridge 9-4
June 06, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State lost its first game of the year to drop to 5-1, while Cal State Northridge improved to 9-4 with the win.
The Matadors took control of the game early with a three-run first inning off of OSU starting pitcher Shane Hawk. Hawk (1-1) had trouble with his command, giving up six walks in two innings of work. The sophomore southpaw gave up six runs, four earned, while striking out three in dropping his first decision of the season.
The Cowboys scored a run in the bottom of the first off of third baseman Paul Powell's sacrifice fly, which cut the deficit to 3-1. Northridge put the game out of reach, however, with a four-run third inning, highlighted by RBI base hits by shortstop Mel Robinson Jr. and catcher Jason Allec.
OSU added a run in the sixth off a RBI double by Jose Virgil that plated pinch runner Brian Kraft from first. The Pokes added two more runs in the seventh to cut the advantage to 7-4, but that was as close as they could get as the Matadors scored a run in both the eighth and ninth innings off of reliever Justin Meccage.
Rightfielder Daylon Monette led the Cowboy offense with two hits, while Mel Robinson paced CSN with three hits on the evening.
Lefty Bill Murphy (3-1) picked up the win for the Matadors, giving up just one earned run in 6.1 innings of work. He allowed only three hits while striking out five and walking six.
Oklahoma State will look to bounce back tomorrow at 4 p.m. against San Diego in the second day of the Shreveport College Classic. The Toreros beat Delaware, 6-2, in the first game of the tourney and are 11-3 on the year.
