The game was delayed two hours and 40 minutes due to rain in the Stillwater area.
The Cowboys jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, two runs coming via Ryan Budde's fourth homer of the season. Michael Lorsbach scored on a throwing error by Kansas to account for the other run.
The Jayhawks scored two runs in the third off an a RBI groundout by Jesse Gremminger and an infield base hit by Ryan Klocksien, cutting the OSU lead to 3-2.
Matt Smith who struck out seven batters in the first three innings ran into trouble in the fourth when Kansas recorded three hits and took advantage of two Cowboy miscues to take a 6-3 lead.
Smith finished with a season-high 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. He gave up 10 hits, six runs (two earned) and walked one in dropping to 2-3 with the loss.
Rusty Philbrick picked up the win for Kansas to improve to 2-2. He threw for six innings and gave up eight hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out two and walking one. Brandon O?Neal pitched the final three innings of two-hit relief to pick up his second save of the year.
Oklahoma State scored a run in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-4 but Kansas scored two runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
The loss snapped the Cowboys five-game winning streak and dropped OSU to 12-8 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 play. Kansas improved to 15-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
