Cowboys Split Doubleheader With Nebraska
June 05, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
After taking a 10-0 lead in Game One behind the hitting of John Cole (4-for-6, home run, four RBIs) and the pitching of Jamie Rodrigue (no-hitter through five and two-thirds) the Cowboys rallied with an eight-run seventh inning.
Nebasett Brown got the Pokes on the board with a two-run double then Carl--s Gautreaux and Jimbo McAuliff both knocked RBI singles to cut the Nebraska lead to 10-5. The Cowboys then scored a run off a double by Ryan Budde and added two more when Luke Scott reached on an error by the third baseman.
The Cornhuskers rebounded to score three in the ninth to give them a 13-8 lead. Budde hit a two-run homer in the ninth to cut the lead to 13-10 but the rally fell short as R.D. Spiehs closed out the game for Nebraska to pick up his second save of the season.
Jamie Rodrigue picked up the win to move to 2-1 on the season while Matt Smith dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
The Cowboys jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when Luke Scott hit a two-run homer to rightfield off of Nebraska starter Shane Komine.
Cowboy starter Frank Bludau pitched six and a third innings of one-hit ball, the lone hit coming by Justin Cowan in the second inning.
Oklahoma State scored one run in the fourth off a sacrifice fly by Toby Rhodes and added another in the seventh off a double by Anthony Purkiss to lead 4-0.
Rusty Rushing pitched the final two and two-thirds innings to pick up his third save of the season. He gave up both of Nebraska's runs in the eighth off of a RBI single by Jamal Strong and a sacrifice fly by Justin Cowan.
Bludau improved to 2-2 with the win while Komine dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
The Cowboys are now 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12 while Nebraska is 7-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
