Cowboys Clobber Aztecs, 12-1
June 05, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
The Aztecs struck first in the third inning when rightfielder Paul Lockhart hit a solo homer to left off of Cowboy starter Josh Merrigan.
That was all San Diego State would score off of Merrigan who scattered eight hits in six innings of work while striking out one.
The Cowboys took a 2-1 lead in the fourth off a sacrifice fly by Roy York and a wild pitch by Aztec hurler Ben Julianel that allowed Budde to score from third.
Budde gave the Pokes a 4-1 lead with his single in the fifth and OSU went on to score six runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-1. Four of the runs came off two-RBI singles by Anthony Purkiss and Nebasett Brown.
Rob Watson added a solo homer, his second round-tripper of the year, and Jimbo McAuliff added a RBI single in the seventh accounting for the final two OSU runs.
Relievers Ryan Herrmann, David Rollandini and Mike Miller limited the Aztecs to one hit in the finalthree innings while each struck out one in an inning of work.
The win pushed the Cowboys record to 4-3 on the season while San Diego State dropped to 6-6. Oklahoma State will be back in action Friday at 4 p.m. CST against Big 12 foe Kansas State. Slated to pitch for OSU is junior lefthander Matt Smith.
