Guerrero, Kelly Earn Spots on U.S. World Team

Guerrero, who earned a bye from the Challenge Tournament as a current member of the U.S. World Team. Guerrero earned a spot on the World Team for the fourth time after defeating Mike Zadick at 132 pounds.
The San Jose, Calif., native swept the best of three series with a 3-0 blanking in the first match and a 5-1 decision in the second match.
Kelly earned his first berth on the World Team after upsetting U.S. Nationals Champion Chris Bono, 4-2 and 7-3.
The Atwater, Calif., native knocked off 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Lincoln McIlravy in the Challenge Tournament finals on Saturday to advance to the Championship Tournament.
In the Challenge Tournament, Kelly dropped Tony Davis, 5-2, and Bill Zadick, 4-3, before advancing to the finals against McIlravy.
In the finals, Kelly scored a three-point throw at the 1:36 mark before McIlravy tied the score at 3-3 with a two-point turn and a takedown.
Kelly regained the lead at 5-3 after scoring a reversal with exposure to take the advantage heading into the second period.
McIlravy quickly cut the lead to 5-4 with a takedown, but Kelly stormed back to capture the 7-4 advantage with a takedown and a two-point exposure. McIlravy scored a pair of takedowns to cut the lead to 7-6, but Kelly prevailed and advanced to the Championship Tournament.
The winners in each weight class for the mens divisions qualify for the 2003 U.S. World Championships team and the 2003 Pan American Games team.
The Freestyle World Championships for men and women will be held in New York City, Sept. 12-14. The Pan American Games are in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in August.
