Guillen, Smedstad Head to Nationals
May 23, 2003 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
Nancy Guillen and Hanna Smedstad are the only two Cowgirls that reached the elite field of participants.
Guillen a freshman from San Salvador, El Salvador, gained an automatic qualifying mark in the hammer. Her best throw of 201-3 ranks as the sixth best in the nation going into the championships. She turned a third-place performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
Guillen will face much of the same competition that she has faced all year as four of the top six throws in the country are by Big 12 athletes.
Smedstad, a junior from Sundsvall, Sweden, made the field in the 5,000m run. Her best mark of 16:20.13 ranks as the 16th best time in the country. She is coming off a fifth-place finish at last week's Big 12 Championship.
The championship will kickoff Wednesday at noon with the women's hammer throw that will feature Guillen. Smedstad is slated to go at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday. The meet will conclude at 9:20 p.m. on Saturday with the men's 4x400m relay.
