Hunter Mahan Named Big 12 Player of the Year
May 02, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboy junior is the fifth OSU student-athlete overall and the fourth straight to receive the honor in the Big 12s seven-year history. Earlier this week, Mahan posted a 13-shot victory at the Big 12 Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa for his second win of the season. The McKinney, Texas native currently leads the conference with a 70.79 stroke average.
Mahan has four other Top-10 finishes to his credit and hasn't placed out of the Top 20 this year. He is currently ranked second nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
One of five finalists for the Ben Hogan Award, Mahan was recently named the inaugural recipient of the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month and Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Month for March as well. The two-time All-American was named to the U.S. Palmer Cup squad for the second time last month and tied for 28th place at The Masters in Augusta, Ga.
Mahan has also established school records this season for consecutive rounds under par (10) and consecutive tournaments under par (7).
Joining Mahan on the all-conference team is junior Pär Nilsson. The selection marked the second time he has been named to the team. This season, the Ljungsbro, Sweden native has played in eight tournaments, posting four Top-20 finishes and recording four rounds in the 60s. Nilssons best finish came at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate where he tied for seventh place.
The Cowboys will return to action on May 10 when they travel to Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla., for The Maxwell.
