Hunter Mahan Named Co-Recipient of Ben Hogan Award
May 10, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
The Hogan is presented annually to the top mens NCAA Division I, II or III or NAIA golfer, taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months. The tie was the first in the awards history.
Mahan, a PING First-Team All-American last season and second-team selection as a freshman, was runner-up at the U.S. Amateur to Barnes and placed third at the NCAA Championships and the Sunnehanna Amateur. The inaugural recipient of the Southern Golf Associations National Amateur of the Month for March and Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Month for March and April, Mahan has twice been named to the U.S. Palmer Cup team.
The McKinney, Texas, junior has twice been named Big 12 Player of the Year and was named to the U.S. World Amateur Team in 2002. Mahan also made the cut at The Masters Tournament last month, tying for 28th place. Mahan recently won the Big 12 Championships by a league-record 13 strokes and set school marks for consecutive rounds under par and consecutive tournaments under par.
"I'm very honored by this award," said Mahan. "The fact that it combines college golf and amateur golf makes it that much more special."
Mahan is the third OSU player to capture the award, joining 1990 recipient Kevin Wentworth and 1995 winner Trip Kuehne.
The Hogan Award presentation banquet will be held at Colonial Country Club on May 19, the Monday prior to the Bank of America Colonial, at 7 p.m.
