OSU Athletics Joins Fight to Save Babies!

WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes’ largest annual fundraising effort, with as many as 1,200 communities from all 50 states participating. The Stillwater WalkAmerica was held Saturday, April 26, at Boomer Lake, and featured a 3-mile walk around the lake.
Cowboy Football head coach Les Miles has been the honorary chairman of the local event since 2001. Coach Miles was joined by his wife, Kathy, and their children, along with the “Orange Pride” football support squad, several Athletic Department staffers, representatives from the Cowgirl Equestrian team and other members of the OSU family.
The Billmans (Clay, Ginger, Abbey and Allie) served as the Stillwater WalkAmerica Ambassador Family for the second straight year. Clay is the publications coordinator for Athletic Development. Blythe McCarty, OSU’s assistant marketing director, again served as chairwoman of the Stillwater WalkAmerica committee, helping to organize the event.
A number of other Athletics personnel donated their time, money and energy to make the 2003 WalkAmerica a success.
This spring, the OSU Athletic Department raised over $2,000 to help babies, the team’s highest total to date.
The OSU contingent received a number of awards for their fundraising efforts, including the Stillwater WalkAmerica “Simply the Best” traveling trophy for the team raising the most money; team with most walker dollars (Division D); the Les Miles Award of Excellence (for raising more than $1,000); highest walker dollar average; and adult walker raising the most money (Billman).
Every day in the United States, as many as 1200 babies are born prematurely, and 400 are born with birth defects. For 65 years, the March of Dimes has supported cutting-edge research and innovative programs to save millions of babies from death or disability and give them a fighting chance.
