April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
* OSU's three times hit by pitches today gave the Cowboys 96 HBPs this season. The previous school record was 84 HBPs in 1995. * Josh Holliday has been hit 54 times in his career, third in school history behind Rusty McNamara (61 HBPs in 1995-97) and Billy Gasparino (55, 1997-present). Holliday's two HBPs today tied a College World Series record and made him the 18th player in CWS history to be hit twice in a game. * Since Thom Dreier's victory at Texas Tech on May 15, OSU starters have recorded just one pitching victory. Dale Pearson earned the decision in OSU's 17-10 victory over UCLA in the Wichita regional May 29. * OSU's most recent first-round victory at the CWS was a 14-4 decision over Cal-State Fullerton in 1990. The Cowboys are now 37-35 in their College World Series history. In Sunday's game against the Rice-Miami loser, the Cowboys will be trying to avoid their second straight two-and-out CWS. In 1996, OSU's last Omaha appearance, the Cowboys lost to Alabama in the first round and Clemson in the second. The Cowboys have lost four straight CWS games dating to 1993. * The Cowboys dropped to 9-13 when their opponent scores first, 2-14 when scoring five or fewer runs and 7-7 against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game. * The Cowboys and Crimson Tide have met just once previously, with Alabama winning an opening-round CWS game 7-5 in 1996. * Until today's game, the Cowboys had recorded at least six runs and seven hits in each NCAA Tournament contest.
