Oklahoma State To Begin Fall Baseball Practice
April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
17 newcomers are added to this year's squad which will be attempting to win 40 games for the 18th consecutive season.
Head coach Tom Holliday will look to replace four mainstays on last year's team which finished the season 40-21. Holliday believes the team's main priority in fall practice is to re-establish the batting order.
"We have to replace Tony Lucca and Marc Fournier in the batting order, and I think if we do that we will have an outstanding ball club. I like the youth that we have and we are looking forward to the future. We are looking for three or four freshman that can play offensively as well as a couple of pitchers to replace Jon Adkins and Danny Prata. Our talent level is high and young and we have to find the right combination of youth and experience in order to challenge for the Big 12 crown."
Some of the top newcomers include junior college standouts outfielder Lamont Mathews (Kishwaukee Junior College), and pitchers Denny New (Panola Junior College) and Danny Kelly (Okaloosa Walter Junior College).
The Cowboys will split into two squads and will practice for the next four weeks, culminating with the annual alumni game on October 12.
