Baseball Team Announces 1999 Schedule
April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
In all the Cowboys play eight teams that made the NCAA regionals last year with 32 home and 29 road contests scheduled.
Head coach Tom Holliday was pleased with the schedule and its balance.
"I think its a good schedule with portions of softness, challenge and competitive situations which will lead us into the Big 12 tournament. I believe that this schedule will help us progress as the season moves on and give us a legitimate chance of winning the conference title."
Oklahoma State opens its 1999 campaign at home against Missouri Southern on Feb. 6 before hosting Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a three-game series on Feb. 12-14.
The early portion of the schedule will see the Cowboys compete against 1998 NCAA participant Loyola Marymount as well as Pac 10 powers Oregon State and Arizona in the San Diego State Classsic in San Diego, Ca. on Feb. 18-21. The Cowboys will also face the host Aztecs, which finished second in the Western Athletic Conference Western Division last season.
The Cowboys open Big 12 play on the road when they take on Texas A&M on the weekend of Feb. 26-28. "Opening with A&M will be an early wakeup call in the Big 12. Both teams should finish in the top four in conference so it will be a nice early season match up in College Station," said Coach Holliday.
Oklahoma State begins March with a 10-game homestand, the longest of the season. The Cowboys will play non-conference foes Prairie View A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff as well as conference rivals Baylor and Missouri during that span.
OSU will travel to Florida during spring break to participate in the Homestead Challenge for the second straight year. The Cowboys will face Ivy League opponents Harvard and Dartmouth as well as Big Ten stalwart Ohio State.
"Both tournaments we play in are high quality matchups. We have something of a rivalry between us and Harvard after beating them in the regionals two years ago and in the ninth inning last season in Homestead. They are a good team which won the Ivy League championship last season and made the NCAA tournament," said Holliday.
The Cowboys open April with home contests against Kansas State, Oral Roberts, a 1998 NCAA participant, and TCU while facing Nebraska, Kansas and North Carolina State, another regional qualifier ,on the road.
Oklahoma State will then host BYU, Western Illinois and Texas-Pan American for six games in a span of five days to close out the month of April.
"These six games in five days will give us a taste of the postseason style of play as far as playing a number of games in consecutive days," stated Holliday.
The Cowboys will close out the regular season against Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech. OSU will play the Sooners in Tulsa on April 30 before continuing the Bedlam series in Oklahoma City on May 1-2. The Longhorns will come to Stillwater for a three-game series on May 7-9 to wind up the home campaign. Oklahoma State will then finish the regular season against Texas Tech on May 14-16 in Lubbock, Texas.
The Big 12 tournament is slated to take place from May 20-23 in Oklahoma City, Okla. This year's field will be expanded to eight teams from six the previous two seasons.
The NCAA regionals will begin on May 28 and run through June 6. 64 teams will be selected for postseason play this season, up from the 48 selected in previous years.
The College World Series will be held in Omaha, Neb. from June 11-19.
