April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State (40-19) led 12-0 after six innings, only to see the Sun Devils (35-22) threaten late in the game.
Arizona State will take on top-seeded Wichita State, upset loser Friday to Arkansas, in an elimination game Saturday morning. The winner of that game will play Oklahoma State later Saturday.
The Cowboys scored four runs in the first inning off Arizona State starter Phill Lowery (8-6), keyed by Jimbo McAuliff's two-run single.
Jay McCullough, who finished with three RBIs, sent Gasparino home in the second on a single, then hit a solo home run to center in the fifth to put Oklahoma State up 6-0.
Oklahoma State put the game out of reach with a six-run sixth inning, including an RBI single by McCullough.
The Sun Devils scored five runs in the seventh, including Greg Halvorson's three-run homer. Mikel Moreno hit a two-run homer in the ninth.
Cowboys starter Frank Bludau (4-3) gave up one hit over the first six innings. Lowery pitched five innings, giving up eight earned runs and seven hits while striking out five.
