RECORDS, RANKINGS, ETC. Oklahoma State enters this weeks game with an overall record of 2-2 and a Big 12 Conference mark of 0-1. The Cowboys won their first two games of the season (Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulsa) but have lost their last two on the road to Mississippi State and Nebraska. Texas Tech will come to Stillwater with an identical overall record of 2-2. The Red Raiders, however, are 1-0 in Big 12 play after an impressive win over Texas A&M last week. Neither team is ranked nationally.
KICKOFF-TICKETS Kickoff for Saturdays game against Texas Tech is set for 7 p.m. (CDT). Some early schedules had the game kicking off at 1 p.m., but that was incorrect. Tickets for this weeks game are available by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at 877-ALL-4-OSU or (405) 744-5745.
A BUSY WEEKEND Theres a lot going on around this weeks game with Texas Tech. Its Parents Weekend, which annually attracts thousands of parents of OSU students. Its also OSU Experience sponsored by High School Relations, and several thousand high school seniors from across Oklahoma will be in the stadium. Its also Young Alumni Day and Band Alumni Day. The POSSE Tailgating Championship will be taking place, and the Top 10 Freshman Awards will be given at halftime.
HELLO, ITS BEEN A WHILE Oklahoma State is hoping to find comfort in the friendly surroundings of Lewis Field this week. The Cowboys will be playing in front of the partisans for the first time since Sept. 11 (Tulsa). OSU has been on the road for two weeks and had an off week since it last played at home. OSU should get used to some home cookin with four of the last seven games on the home turf.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THESE GUYS? When O-State hosts Texas Tech this weekend, the Cowboys will by trying to snap a four-game losing streak to the Red Raiders. Tech has claimed a win in each of the three games played since the Big 12 Conference came to fruition in 1996. The Red Raiders also won a 1989 game in Stillwater by a 31-15 margin. Oklahoma States last victory over Texas Tech was 1988 in Tokyo, Japan, when Barry Sanders led the Cowboys to a 45-42 win just hours after he was announced as the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner.
ON THE AIR Saturdays game will be broadcast live on the OSU Radio Network to 30 stations throughout the state of Oklahoma. Bill Teegins, Sports Director at KWTV in Oklahoma City is the radio voice of Cowboy Football. Tom Dirato, Coordinator of Radio and TV at OSU, is the network analyst. The network broadcast begins one hour before kickoff and ends with a live report from the Cowboy dressing room with players and Coach Simmons. The Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game will not be televised either live or by tape delay.
IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING While Oklahoma State has not fared well against Nebraska, winning just two since 1960, the Cowboys have done a good job bouncing back the week after the Huskers. OSU is 22-13-1 in games immediately following Nebraska. This record does not include 1963, when the OSU-Kansas State game, scheduled the week after Nebraska, was canceled after the assassination of President Kennedy.
NOTE TO THE MEDIA Because of the open date on Oct. 16, there will be NO media luncheon next week. The next luncheon is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 18 at noon on the third level of the Lewis Field press box.
OSU LAST WEEK The Cowboys suffered a 38-14 loss at nationally ranked Nebraska. OSU spotted the Cornhuskers a 31-0 first-half lead before outscoring their hosts 14-7 in the second half. Nebraska had 385 yards of total offense but took advantage of an OSU fumble on its first offensive possession and a blocked punt later in the first quarter. Nebraska turned both into touchdowns. The OSU offense came to life in the second half, scoring on a six-yard pass from B.J. Tiger to Marcellus Rivers and a one-yard run by Jamaal Fobbs. Fobbs led OSUs rushing effort with 67 yards on 17 carries. Tiger and freshman Ben Bowling combined to complete 7-of-21 passes for 85 yards. Two OSU receivers, Terance Richardson and Ethan Howell, caught two passes each.
TEXAS TECH LAST WEEK Like Oklahoma State, Texas Tech enjoyed an off week Sept. 25 and had an extra week to prepare for a nationally ranked opponent. The Red Raiders, stung by North Texas in Lubbock on Sept. 18, rallied Saturday night to upend Texas A&M 21-19. Sammy Morris, playing for Ricky Williams, who suffered a season-ending injury in the Raiders season opener, rushed for 170 yards on 33 carries as Tech defeated A&M for a third straight time in Lubbock. The Red Raiders were outstanding on defense, limiting Texas A&M to just 52 yards on 27 carries. Tech quarterback Rob Peters added a pair of touchdown passes during a second quarter that saw the Raiders erase a 10-0 deficit. Techs defense did not allow an offensive touchdown by Texas A&M. The Aggies points came on four field goals and a blocked punt.
UPDATING THE 1999 OPPOSITION Oklahoma States 1999 opponents have a combined record of 30-21 going into this weekends play. Three of OSUs 1999 opponents are still unbeaten after five weeks of regular season play.

HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS Oklahoma States head football coach is four games into his fifth season and will be coaching his 51st OSU game when the Cowboys host Texas Tech this week. Coach Simmons will bring a career mark of 24-26 into Saturday game. Simmons came to Oklahoma State from Colorado, where he was assistant head coach for Bill McCartney. He guided OSU to a bowl game just three years into his tenure and was the 1997 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.
CONTRACT EXTENSION Earlier this season, one day before the Cowboys disposed of Tulsa on Lewis Field, the Oklahoma State Board of Regents approved a contract extension for Bob Simmons that will keep him as OSUs head football coach through the 2005 season.
MILESTONES UNDER SIMMONS Oklahoma States football fortunes have soared since Simmons became the schools 20th head coach on Dec. 4, 1994. Below are just a few of those milestones.
* OSU registered its first win under Coach Simmons on Sept. 16, 1995, when the Cowboys upended Southwest Missouri State 35-7 on Lewis Field. * When Simmons led the Cowboys to a 30-26 win over Missouri at Columbia on Oct. 21, 1995, it snapped a 20-game winless streak in conference play. * Two weeks after defeating Missouri at Columbia, the Cowboys defeated Oklahoma at Norman. It was OSUs first win over its in-state rival since 1976 and was a signal of things to come. O-State has defeated Oklahoma three of the four years since Simmons became head coach. * When Oklahoma State won at Iowa State in the 1997 season opener, it would be the start of a six-game winning streak and help guide the Cowboys to their first bowl season since 1988. OSU would win its first six games of the season, including back-to-back wins over Texas and Colorado. * Since overtime became vogue in college football in 1996, Oklahoma State has had more than its share of extra period contests. Under Simmons, the Cowboys have gone into overtime four times, including a two-overtime thriller at Texas A&M two years ago. * Since Bob Simmons took over the OSU reins in 1995, the Cowboys have faced 16 teams that were nationally ranked going into the game. Seven of those opponents were ranked in the top 10 whey they faced Oklahoma State. In the last two seasons, Oklahoma State has defeated three opponents (Texas, Colorado and Mississippi State) that were nationally ranked. * Under Bob Simmons, Oklahoma State is 10-0 against non-conference competition on Lewis Field and 12-6 vs. non-league opposition overall.

Noting the Cowboys
D-BACKS LEAD THE WAY Oklahoma States defensive backs have shared the load so far in 1999. Free safety J.B. Flowers leads the defense with 21 total tackles. Eight of Flowers tackles came at Nebraska on Saturday. Against the Huskers, Flowers was credited with two solo stops and eight assists. Cornerback Alvin Porter is also having a solid season and is number two in tackles with 20. Porter had three tackles against Nebraska on Saturday. The two DBs also have two interceptions each and have combined for eight passes broken up.
BUSY AGAINST NEBRASKA O-States defensive backs were a busy group against Nebraska last week. Starters Evan Howell, J.B. Flowers, Adam Edwards and Alvin Porter combined for 20 tackles and one for minus six yards. Of the 20 tackles by the D-backs, nine were unassisted. Howell also had two pass breakups.
LEVELS STEPS UP Sophomore Dwayne Levels stepped into the starting lineup last week against Nebraska and turned in a solid performance. Levels started in place of an injured Kenyatta Wright and logged three solo tackles and two assists against the Huskers. For the season, Levels has 15 tackles (tied for fourth on the defense) and a sack.
MALLORY TURNS INT INTO TD Defensive tackle Cortney Mallory came up with Oklahoma States sixth interception of the season against Mississippi State in Starkville. Mallory not only intercepted the pass, he returned it 46 yards for OSUs only touchdown against the Bulldogs. It was the first interception by an OSU defensive lineman since 1997 when the same Mallory intercepted a pass against Louisiana-Lafayette.
AS FOR THE DEFENSIVE ENDS ... One of the early highlights of Oklahoma States 1999 season has been the play of the defensive ends. Zac Warner, Kevin Williams and Juqua Thomas have combined for 16 tackles behind the line, including eight sacks. Thomas, a junior college transfer from Northeastern A&M leads the team with seven tackles for minus 48 yards and 3.5 sacks for minus 34 yards.
WRIGHT, KNAULS ON BUTKUS LIST Two of OSUs linebackers, Wright and senior captain Tarrell Knauls, are on the watch list for the Butkus Award, given annually to the top linebacker in the country. Below is a capsule look at their outstanding OSU careers:

NATHAN MOVES UP RUSHING LIST Tailback Nathan Simmons spent the summer of 1999 going through a vigorous rehab program for major knee surgery last December. Four games into his final OSU season, Simmons is on the verge of becoming the 13th player in Oklahoma State history to rush for 2,000 or more career yards. The son of head coach Bob Simmons, now has 1,850 career yards, just 150 yards shy of the 2,000 mark. He is 16th on the all-time OSU rushing list, 10 yards from surpassing Robert Turner and moving into 15th place on the rushing list.

SYDNES SCORING Senior kicker Tim Sydnes began the season sixth on the career scoring list and is quickly adding to those totals. Earlier this season against Tulsa, Sydnes connected on all five PATs and was a perfect three-of-three in the field-goal department. He was the Big 12 Conference Specialty Player of the Week after that game. Through three-plus seasons, Sydnes has scored 232 points and trails No. 5 Thurman Thomas by 34 points. He is already the third-most-prolific kick scorer in OSU history, trailing Cary Blanchard and Larry Roach.

RICHARDSON MOVES UP RECEPTION CHART Senior receiver Terance Richardson had two catches for 28 yards against Nebraska last week and now has three for 33 on the season. Richardson now has 67 career receptions and is 18th on OSUs career list. He will go into this weeks game needing two receptions to move past Jamie Harris into 17th on the all-time chart.
MORE ON TERANCE Richardson had the longest running play of the day by either Oklahoma State or Nebraska. His 35-yard run was the longest of the season against the Nebraska defense.
MORE RECORD BOOK STUFF Tailback Jamaal Fobbs turned in a 67-yard rushing performance against a tough Nebraska defense on Saturday and, in the process, moved up the career rushing chart at Oklahoma State. Fobbs, who has 231 yards this season, now has 1,486 for his OSU career and is 19th on the career list. He will go into this weeks game against Texas Tech needing 21 yards to move past Bobby Cole into 18th place.
NEXT WEEK After this weeks game against Texas Tech on Lewis Field, the Cowboys have an open date on Oct. 16 before hosting Kansas State on Oct. 23 in the annual Homecoming game. The Cowboys then travel to Texas A&M before hosting Texas on Nov. 6 and closing out the home schedule on Nov. 13 against Kansas. OSU finishes the regular season on the road at Baylor on Nov. 20 and Oklahoma on Nov. 27.
DEFENSE PART ONE: TOTAL YARDAGE OSUs defense stopped almost everything in the season-opening victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cowboys allowed just 61 yards total offense, the second-lowest amount ever by an OSU opponent. The school-record total-defense performance came in 1947, when OSU held Kansas State to 29 yards. The Cowboys currently rank sixth in the nation in total defense (233.0 ypg) and third in the Big 12.
DEFENSE PART TWO: AGAINST THE RUN The Cowboys held Tulsa, which had come into the game off consecutive 300-yard rushing performances dating to last season, to minus-20 yards on the ground, the second-lowest number ever recorded by an OSUopponent. The school record was the 33 yards in net losses suffered by Kansas State in 1980. The Cowboys rank 24th nationally against the rush, allowing 104.0 yards per game.
DEFENSE PART THREE: AGAINST THE PASS OSUs secondary was widely believed to be its weakness in 1998. However, the first four games of 1999 have shown a change in that trend as OSU has allowed just 129.0 passing yards per game to rank seventh in the nation. OSUs opponents pass-efficiency rating is a mere 78.2, the fourth-lowest mark in the country. Part of the Cowboys stinginess against the pass has had to do with their quarterback pressure: OSU has recorded 14 sacks in four games.,/p>

THE SERIES Saturdays game will mark the 27th meeting between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in a series that dates back to 1935. The teams played regularly between 1935 and 1957 but only met eight times while OSU was a member of the Big Eight Conference during 1960-95. Texas Tech leads the overall series 15-8-3, and the Red Raiders own a 7-4 advantage in games played in Stillwater. The Red Raiders have won the last four meetings between the teams, OSUs last victory came in 1988 when the Barry Sanders-led Cowboys won 45-42 in a game played in Tokyo. The Cowboys last victory over Texas Tech in Stillwater came in 1975 in a 17-16 triumph.
ABOUT THE RED RAIDERS Texas Tech is 2-2 after shocking then-sixth-ranked Texas A&M in Lubbock last week. The Red Raiders, like OSU earlier in the season, saw a key offensive performer go down with a knee injury when running back Ricky Williams was lost for the season last week. But Sammy Morris has proved an able backup, he is ranked ninth in the Big 12 in rushing, averaging over 60 yards per game. Punt-return man John Norman ranks 21st nationally in that category, and kick returner Rickey Hunter ranks 39th. Techs defense ranks 16th nationally in total yardage.
COACH SPIKE DYKES Spike Dykes is in his 13th season as head coach at Texas Tech and will carry an overall record of 78-64-2 into Saturdays game against Oklahoma State. Dykes, the dean of Big 12 coaches, has held the Texas Tech coaching position for longer than any coach in school history.
LAST YEARS GAME The Cowboys struck for an early 10-0 lead but eventually fell 24-17 before a homecoming crowd at Texas Tech on Oct. 18, 1998. The Cowboys defense did a solid job on TTs star running back, Ricky Williams, holding him under 100 yards for the first time in the season. But two lost fumbles, one returned for a touchdown and the other to set up a score, a blocked punt that set up a touchdown, and 11 penalties for 132 yards doomed the Pokes, who got 81 yards rushing from Nathan Simmons and 78 from Tony Lindsay.
