Texas-Pan American Shocks No. 24 Baseball, 5-2
April 08, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Ortiz shutout the Cowboys for eight innings before running into trouble in the ninth. OSU scored two runs off of two hits in the inning and trailed 5-2 with two outs and the bases loaded. Second baseman Kevin Lucas hit a sharp liner to left-centerfield that was caught by centerfielder Anthony Arteaga to end the ball game.
Ortiz fired his fifth complete game of the season and struck out eight Cowboys to move to 6-5 on the season.
The loss snapped OSU's 25 game home non-conference win streak dating back to an 18-17 loss to Centenary on Feb. 24, 1998.
The game was a scoreless pitchers duel for five innings between Ortiz and OSU hurler Thom Dreier before UTPA got on the board with four runs in the sixth. The first run was charged to Dreier, who fell to 5-3, and the other three were charged to reliever Ryan Herrmann. Shortstop Dusty Hart lead off the inning with a double that knocked Dreier out of the game. Hart advanced to third on a passed ball and scored off a RBI single by designated hitter Gabe De La Garza. The Broncs scored three more runs, two coming off of RBI singles by catcher Aaron Lakey and centerfielder Anthony Arteaga, to take a 4-0 advantage. Lakey added a sacrifice fly RBI in the eight to give UTPA a 5-0 lead.
The win upped Texas-Pan Americans ledger to 27-22 while Oklahoma State fell to 32-12 on the year.
The Cowboys will be back in action this weekend against Oklahoma in Bedlam Baseball. The Pokes and Sooners will open the series with a 7:35 p.m. match up on Friday at Drillers Stadium in Tulsa. The series will move to the Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City for a Saturday afternoon game at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest before the teams wrap-up Bedlam with a Sunday tilt at 7 p.m.
