April 08, 2003 | Cowboy Football
POKES VISIT TEXAS TECH After narrowly missing against second-ranked Nebraska, Oklahoma State travels to Lubbock, Texas, this week to face Texas Tech. Kickoff at Techs Jones Stadium is set for just after 6 p.m. (CDT), and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net. Oklahoma State, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 Conference play, will be trying to snap a three-game losing streak against the Red Raiders. Texas Tech will come into the game with a perfect 5-0 overall mark and on top of the Big 12s South Division with a 2-0 record.
RANKINGS Neither Oklahoma State or Texas Tech are ranked among the countrys top 25. Both, however, received votes in the latest AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Polls released Sunday afternoon.
COWBOYS-TECH ON THE AIR Saturday nights game at Texas Tech will be broadcast live on the Cowboy Network with Bill Teegins and Tom Dirato describing the action. The game will also be televised live by Fox Sports Net. It will be the third television game for OSU in 1998 and the second straight on Fox Sports Net.
OSU ON THE ROAD Texas Tech represents the second of three straight games away from Lewis Field for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys faced Nebraska in Kansas City last week and will travel to Manhattan to face Kansas State next week. OSU will leave Stillwater, via Sun Country Air charter, early Friday afternoon for Lubbock, where the team will headquarter at the Holiday Inn, Lubbock Plaza. The Cowboys will hold a light workout at Jones Stadium on Friday at a time to be determined. That workout is closed to the media, but coach Bob Simmons is available just prior to that practice. Contact the media relations office at (405) 744-5749 for details. OSU players are not available to the media on Friday.
WRAPPING UP NEBRASKA In a solid performance on both sides of the football, Oklahoma State came within an eyelash of upending second-ranked Nebraska at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The game ended with Oklahoma State on offense inside the Nebraska 1-yard line and trailing by just a touchdown. The Cowboys held Nebraska to 215 total yards and just 73 rushing yards. Oklahoma State, on the other hand, rushed for 175 and passed for 180, compiling 355 yards of total offense. Tailback Nathan Simmons had his second straight 100-yard rushing performance. Simmons carried the ball 26 times vs. Nebraska for 114 yards. Wide receiver Ethan Howell had the biggest day of his OSU career with 73 yards on three receptions. One of his receptions was a 67 yard touchdown pass from Tony Lindsay in the fourth quarter that brought the Cowboys even at 17-17.
ARROWHEAD ATTENDANCE All the seats at Kansas Citys Arrowhead Stadium were filled Saturday night when Oklahoma State and Nebraska squared off. In fact, the attendance of 79,555 was the second-largest crowd to watch an OSU game during the Bob Simmons era. Below are the top five crowds of the past three seasons.

MURDERERS ROW, PART TWO Having narrowly missed a win over second-ranked Nebraska, Oklahoma State sets its sights on another unbeaten opponent and then still another unbeaten opponent. Oklahoma State faces a Texas Tech team that is unbeaten through five games and has won seven of its last eight, dating back to the end of the 1997 season. Following Tech, the Cowboys head for Manhattan, Kan., and an Oct. 17 date with the fourth-ranked Wildcats. Kansas State will take a 4-0 mark into this weeks game against Colorado at Boulder.

TEXAS TECH LAST WEEK The Red Raiders built a 31-16 lead over Baylor with less than seven minutes to play but had to survive a pair of Bear touchdowns in the final minutes to hang on for a 31-29 victory in front of 38,801 fans at Jones Stadium in Lubbock. Baylor led 3-0 after a second-quarter field goal and forged a 10-10 tie at the 8:34 mark of the third quarter. Ricky Williams rushed for 159 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in the winning Texas Tech effort. Quarterback Rob Peters rushed for 106 yards and passed for 226, completing 10 of 15 passes. He threw for one touchdown and rushed for another. Tech had four receivers with 50 or more yards in the win over Baylor, led by Kyle Allamon who had three catches for 90 yards. As a team, Texas Tech had 538 yards of total offense, including 307 on the ground and 276 through the air. The Red Raider defense allowed Baylor 381 total yards, including 77 on the ground and 304 through the air.
COACH BOB SIMMONS Oklahoma States Bob Simmons is four games into his fourth season and will carry a career record of 19-20 into this weeks game against Texas Tech. Simmons was named OSUs 20th head football coach on Dec. 16, 1994. Three years and four games later, he has established OSU as one of the top football programs in the Big 12 Conference. He guided the Cowboys to a 4-8 record in 1995, a 5-6 mark in 1996 and an 8-4 record a year ago. Simmons 1997 squad finished with OSUs best record in a decade and made an appearance in the Builders Square Alamo Bowl. He guided the Cowboys into the national rankings a year ago, climbing as high as number 12 and finishing 25th.
SIMMONS TO COACH IN HULA BOWL Oklahoma States football boss has been selected to coach in the 1998 Hula Bowl, to be played in January in Honolulu. Simmons will help guide the North squad.
1997 HONORS OSUs football coach was the recipient of numerous awards following the Cowboys 8-4 bowl season of a year ago. He was the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, according to league coaches. He was a regional Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and was a finalist on several national coach-of-the-year lists. He was the Black Coaches Associations National Football Coach of the Year and on the receiving end of numerous in-state awards.

HOW FAR THEYVE COME Saturday nights seven-point loss to second-ranked Nebraska further exemplifies how far Oklahoma States football program has progressed under Bob Simmons. Just 38 games ago (in Simmons first game at the helm), Nebraska posted the most lopsided victory in the history of the series (64-21). Saturday night, Oklahoma State was less than a yard from Nebraskas goal line and trailing by just a touchdown when the game ended. More importantly to the overall picture, however, was the level of dominance on both sides of the ball the Cowboys exhibited.
AGAINST THE RANKED Texas Tech narrowly missed being ranked in both major polls this week. Had the Red Raiders moved into the polls, this week would have been the third straight game against a ranked opponent with another (Kansas State) coming up on October 17. Since Bob Simmons arrived for the 1995 season, Oklahoma State has played 12 nationally ranked opponents, including three non-conference foes who were ranked. The Cowboys are 3-9 overall vs. nationally ranked opposition but are 3-3 over the past two seasons.

THE SERIES Saturday night will mark the 26th meeting between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in a series that dates back to 1935. The teams played regularly between 1935 and 1957 but only met eight times while OSU was a member of the Big Eight Conference (1960-95). Texas Tech leads the overall series 14-8-3, and the Red Raiders lead by a 5-2-3 margin in games played in Lubbock. Oklahoma State has not won in Lubbock since 1944, losing three and tying two in the five games since.
MORE ON THE RED RAIDERS Almost midway through the 1998 season, Texas Tech has its sights set on the Big 12 South Division title. The Red Raiders will come into Saturdays game against Oklahoma State with a perfect 5-0 mark overall and a 2-0 record in conference play. Techs league victories have come at Iowa State and last week at home over Baylor. The Texas Tech offense features the nations second-leading rusher in Ricky Williams. Williams has carried 169 times through five games for 929 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. He is averaging 185.8 yards per game and 5.5 yards per carry. Tech quarterback Matt Tittle is number four in the league and 21st in the country in passing efficiency. He has passed for 779 yards and five touchdowns. Wide Receiver Donnie Hart is number one in the league and 17th in the country in receiving yards per game with an average of 25.30. Through five games he has 20 catches for 506 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, Tech is number one in the league in rushing defense (71.6) and number seven in total defense (300.4).

SERIES NOTES Going into Saturdays game, Texas Tech has a three-game winning streak over the Cowboys. OSU has not defeated Tech since 1988, when the Cowboys posted a 45-42 win in Tokyo, Japan. That was the final regular season game for Barry Sanders, who rushed for 332 yards and scored four touchdowns vs. Tech ... Texas Techs last three victories over the Cowboys have been decisive. In the three games (1989, 1996 and 1997), Techs average margin of victory has been 29.7 to 7.0 for OSU ... Oklahoma State has not scored a touchdown vs. Texas Tech in the previous two meetings ... Three of the 10 previous games between OSU and Texas Tech in Lubbock have ended in ties ... The last time Oklahoma State played in Lubbock was 1974, and the game finished in a flurry. Texas Tech stopped OSUs Sam Lisle inches short of the goal on a two-point conversion try to escape with a 14-13 win.
COACH SPIKE DYKES Spike Dykes is in his 12th season as head coach at Texas Tech and will carry an overall record of 74-57-1 into Saturdays game against Oklahoma State. Dykes is the dean of Big 12 Coaches and has the Red Raiders unbeaten through five games for the first time since 1976.
NON-CONFERENCE STREAK ALIVE Oklahoma State has a 13-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents after the Cowboys defeated Mississippi State two weeks ago. OSU has not lost at home to a non-league opponent since Sept. 21, 1991, when TCU claimed a 24-21 victory.

SIMMONS BUSTS OUT Junior TB Nathan Simmons had a career-high 148 yards in the Mississippi State game as he crossed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for his career. He followed that performance with probably the best game of his career, rushing for 114 yards against Nebraska. He became the first back in two years to gain over 100 yards against the Huskers, who came into the game with the nations fourth-best rushing defense. Simmons is now sixth in rushing (88.25 ypg) in the run-dominated Big 12 and ranks 42nd nationally. Simmons 62-yard rush against Kansas was OSUs longest since 1995, when David Thompson went for a 91-yard run against Kansas State.
DEFENSE SHINES Nebraska entered Saturdays contest with the second-best rushing offense in the nation. However, the Cowboys turned in a remarkable performance, holding the Huskers to an amazing four yards in the first half and 73 yards for the game. OSU became the first team to hold Nebraska under 100 yards rushing since Miami in the 1992 Orange Bowl, and the Cowboys are the first Cornhusker opponent to do so in regular-season play since Iowa State held NU to 77 yards in a 37-28 Cyclone victory in 1976. It marked Nebraskas fewest rushing yards since the Cornhuskers gained 70 against Oklahoma in 1975. The Cowboys have held three of their four opponents under 100 yards rushing; Nebraskas previous season low had been 236 yards against UAB.
WRIGHT PERFORMS AS EXPECTED Junior LB Kenyatta Wright, a preseason candidate for the Butkus Award, has lived up to his billing in OSUs first four games. Wright leads the Cowboys in tackles (28), tackles for loss (six for 34 yards) and sacks (three for 30 yards).
HOWELLS FIRST CATCHES ARE BIG Sophomore WR Ethan Howell certainly made the first reception of his collegiate career count. Chaloupka and Howell connected on a 64-yard pass in the fourth quarter at Tulsa; it was Howells first-ever catch, and it was OSUs longest pass play since Gary Porter hit Shannon Culver for an 80-yard gainer against Missouri in 1992. Howell and Chaloupka werent finished, though; on the next two plays, they connected on passes of 10 and 21 yards, leading to Brian Aikins one-yard score on the next play. Against Nebraska, Howell topped his Tulsa performance, catching his first touchdown pass a 67-yard toss from sophomore QB Tony Lindsay to tie the game in the fourth quarter.
LINDSAY AVOIDS SOPH SLUMP Lindsay was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1997, and although he had a disappointing night at Tulsa, his play early in OSUs season would seem to indicate hell continue his success. Lindsay scored twice on the ground against both Kansas and Mississippi State, and he had his best passing night of the year completing 11 for 17 attempts for 201 yards, including a career-long 64-yarder to Terrance Richardson against the Bulldogs. Lindsay connected with Howell for a 67-yard touchdown against Nebraska, the longest pass play by an OSU team in six years.
CENTURY/MILLENIUM MEN OSUs tailback duo of Simmons and sophomore Jamaal Fobbs combined for an impressive evening against Mississippi State. Both Fobbs and Simmons went over the 100-yard rushing night for the game, and each topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark for his career. Their performance marked the first time two OSU backs ran for 100 yards in a game since Andre Richardson and David Thompson accomplished the feat against Iowa State in 1996.
FABULOUS FOBBS Fobbs scored on rushes of 55 and three yards against Mississippi State, notching two rushing scores in a game for the first time in his career. He gained 104 yards against the Bulldogs, and he now has 10 touchdowns in his career (seven on the ground) and four rushing scores this year.
RICHARDSON COMES TO LIFE Junior WR Terrance Richardson had his best game of the season against Mississippi State, grabbing four Tony Lindsay passes for 106 yards. He became the first wide receiver at OSU to catch passes totaling 100 yards since Rafael Denson in the 1994 Colorado game (tight end Alonzo Mayes topped the century mark once in each of the last three seasons). His 64-yard reception from Tony Lindsay in the first quarter was the longest reception of his career.
FOURTH-DOWN SUCCESS CONTINUES OSU converted 12 of 17 fourth-down attempts last season, one shy of the school record, and that trend continued in the Kansas game. The Cowboys went for it twice in Lawrence and were successful both times. Both attempts extended drives that eventually went for scores. Last season, eight of OSUs 12 successful fourth-down conversions extended scoring drives. OSU is 7 for 8 on fourth down this season, including two memorable plays against Nebraska freshman P Scott Elders 22-yard pass to junior DB Evan Howell on a fake punt and Lindsays crucial pass to senior WR Sean Love with 10 seconds left.
PICK LEADERS Junior DB Adam Edwards and junior LB Troy West are tied atop the Big 12 standings in interceptions with 0.50 per game. Each has two INTs in four games, with West picking off two Kansas passes one of which he returned for a touchdown and Edwards intercepting two Mississippi State passes.
OUR BALL After holding onto the ball for 36:14 at Kansas, OSU had won the time-of-possession battle in 13 straight regular-season games, a streak that was snapped in Tulsas victory over OSU. The Cowboys record during the 13-game streak was 10-3. OSU returned to its ball-hogging ways against Mississippi State, holding the ball for nearly 39 minutes. The Cowboys 71 rushing plays against the Bulldogs are the most since the team ran 75 times against Kansas State in 1976. OSU possessed the ball for 35:10 against Nebraska, marking the third time in this years four games that the Cowboys have had the ball for over 35 minutes.
OUR BALL, PART II OSU ranked sixth in the nation with a plus-13 turnover margin in 1997, and the takeaway trend has continued to start the 1998 season. Despite four turnovers at Tulsa, the Cowboys have a +0.75 turnover margin, the fourth-best mark in the Big 12 and the 25th-best margin in the country. Neither OSU nor Nebraska turned the ball over Saturday; ironically, the most recent OSU game in which neither team committed a turnover also inolved Nebraska. Surprisingly, such a game had not happened since Nov. 16, 1963, when the Huskers defeated OSU 20-16.
NOT IN OUR HOUSE The Basketball Cowboys 78-game home non-conference winning streak gets all the press, but the OSU football team has an impressive streak of its own. The Cowboys have won 13 straight games against non-league foes on Lewis Field after the Sept. 19 victory over 25th-ranked Mississippi State.
CHALOUPKA PROVIDES A SPARK Junior QB Chris Chaloupka saw his first playing time as a quarterback (he played at Kansas as a kick holder) in the Tulsa game, and he made the most of his opportunity. Chaloupka directed OSU on scoring drives of 96 and 87 yards and completed nine of 14 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown, the seventh TD toss of his career.
RIVERS EARNS FIRST CATCH, SCORES Like Howell, redshirt freshman TE Marcellus Rivers earned the first pass reception of his career in the Tulsa game. Rivers later made a nice catch of a Chaloupka pass at the back of the end zone for OSUs second touchdown of the night.
NOTING THE COWBOYS Tulsas 35 points are the most against the Cowboys in a non-conference game since Wyoming defeated OSU 45-25 in 1995 ... Senior FB Brian Aikins third-quarter touchdown against Mississippi State was the ninth of his career and his second this season ... Junior PK Tim Sydnes has made 40 of his last 41 PAT attempts ... Lindsays first-quarter touchdown against Mississippi State marked the first time this season that OSU has scored on its opening drive ... The MSU game marks the first time this year that OSU has held a halftime lead ... Junior LB Billy Stone picked off a fourth-quarter pass against MSU for the second interception of his career. The first came in OSUs 12-0 victory over Oklahoma in 1995 ... Junior TE Garrett Steggs 41-yard second-quarter reception against NU was the longest of his career and just his third catch this season ... The 24-17 loss to Nebraska marks the closest game in the series since the Huskers won 14-10 in Stillwater in 1983.
