Football Home Opener Set for Saturday
April 08, 2003 | Cowboy Football
COWBOYS FINALLY HOME -- After two straight weeks on the road, Oklahoma State will finally get to play in front of the friendlies as the Cowboys host Mississippi State. Kickoff on Lewis Field is set for 6 p.m., as the two teams meet for just the third time ever and the first time since 1971. Not only is it the home opener for the Cowboys, it's Orange Peel and Parents Weekend at OSU.
HOME APPEARANCE NICE, BUT BRIEF -- Oklahoma State's game against Mississippi State is one of the more attractive home openers in recent history. While it will be nice to play at home, the Cowboys will should keep their travel bags handy. After the MSU game, OSU is open before hitting the road for three straight against Nebraska (Kansas City), Texas Tech (Lubbock) and Kansas State (Manhattan). Oklahoma State's next home game won't be until Oct. 24, when the Oklahoma Sooners come calling.
BIG CROWD EXPECTED, BUT TICKETS REMAIN -- A Lewis Field crowd in excess of 40,000 is expected Saturday night, but tickets are still available by calling the Athletic Ticket Office (405) 744-5845 or 1-800-522-6858. OSU's season-ticket sales surged in 1998, following the Alamo Bowl season of '97. One week from the home opener, OSU has sold more season tickets than any season since 1985.
ON THE AIR -- Saturday night's game will be broadcast live on the Cowboy Radio Network. Bill Teegins, KWTV Sports Director and Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year, is the radio voice of OSU football. Tom Dirato, Coordinator of Radio and TV at OSU, provides the analysis. The network broadcast begins one hour before kickoff and concludes with a live call-in show featuring head coach Bob Simmons. The Mississippi State game will not be televised.
ORANGE PEEL WEEKEND -- Saturday night's game with Mississippi State is the culmination of Orange Peel Weekend at Oklahoma State. Orange Peel, the student-sponsored and -produced event that began three years ago, will feature comedian Anthony Clark and singer Randy Travis. Tickets for Orange Peel are available by calling (405) 744-7100.
NEBRASKA CREDENTIALS -- Credentials for Oklahoma State's game against Nebraska in Kansas City will be issued next week. For those who regularly cover OSU, all efforts will be made to fill your requests. Due to space limitations, credentials will not be issued to anyone who did not regularly cover OSU at home and away last season.
OSU LAST WEEK -- The University of Tulsa passed its way past Oklahoma State 35-20 on a wet Skelly Stadium carpet last week in Tulsa. OSU fell behind by three touchdowns just before halftime and trailed 35-0 before scoring its first touchdown late in the third quarter. The Cowboys could not get untracked offensively against TU, which had 439 yards of total offense of its own. The Cowboys did score the final 20 points of the game, the first coming on a two-yard run by Nathan Simmons and the last on a one-yard run by fullback Brian Aikins. Sandwiched between the two scores was the first career touchdown reception by redshirt freshman tight end Marcellus Rivers. OSU's leading rusher was Jamaal Fobbs, who had 56 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Tony LIndsay, who completed five of 13 for 47 yards and rushed for 29 yards, shared time with Chris Chaloupka, who passed for 187 yards in his first playing time at quarterback this season.
MISSISSIPPI STATE LAST WEEK -- The Bulldogs ran their record to 2-0 with a 14-6 win at Memphis. Mississippi State took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 62-yard run by James Johnson. The Bulldogs would not score again until the closing minutes of the game but held Memphis to just two field goals in between. MSU's final and clinching touchdown came with 29 seconds remaining on a 29-yard run by Pig Prather. The final scoring drive covered 80 yards and took just seven plays. The Bulldogs had 187 rushing yards and 69 yards passing while allowing Memphis 106 rushing yards and 153 through the air. Johnson was MSU's and the game's leading rusher with 192 yards on 25 carries
IT'S BIG 12 vs. SEC FOR THE ONLY TIME IN '98 -- When Oklahoma State and Mississippi State collide Saturday night, it will be the only time during the 1998 regular season that teams from the Big 12 Conference and SEC are scheduled to play. Last year, the Big 12 was 3-4 in competition with the SEC. Oklahoma State has not faced an SEC opponent since Sept. 30, 1995, when the Cowboys lost at Tennessee by a 31-0 margin.
OSU vs. THE SEC, PART II -- Mississippi State will be making its second-ever appearance on Lewis Field, and the SEC will provide the opposition for an OSU home game for just the third time in 96 years. Georgia played in Stillwater in 1947, claiming a 20-7 win, while Mississippi State's only other trip to Stillwater ended with a 26-7 OSU victory.
FROM THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE -- O-State's Saturday night game against Mississippi State opens a quite demanding part of the Cowboys' 1998 schedule. Beginning with the Bulldogs this week, five of OSU's next six opponents (Mississippi State, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Texas A&M), were a combined 46-14 last year. Throw in an always-difficult game against in-state rival Oklahoma on October 24 and a visit to Austin on November 7, and the next seven weeks represent a real challenge for the Cowboys.

COACH BOB SIMMONS -- Saturday's game against Mississippi State will mark the 38th game of the Bob Simmons era of Oklahoma State football. Simmons was named OSU's 20th head football coach on Dec. 16, 1994. Three years and two games later, he has established OSU as one of the top football programs in the Big 12 Conference. He guided the Cowboys to a 4-8 record in 1995; a 5-6 mark in 1996 and an 8-4 record a year ago. In three short years, the program has gone from almost dormant to one that should contend for the Big 12 South title. Under Simmons in 1997, OSU won its first six, climbed to number 12 in the national rankings and made its first post season appearance since 1988. Following OSU's 35-20 loss at Tulsa last week, Simmons will carry a career record of 18-19 into this week's game against Mississippi State.
1997 HONORS -- OSU's football coach was the recipient of numerous awards following the Cowboys' 8-4, bowl season of a year ago. He was the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, according to league coaches. He was a regional Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and a finalist on several national coach of the year lists. He was the Black Coaches Association's National Football Coach of the Year and on the receiving end of numerous in-state awards.

BUILDING BLOCKS -- Oklahoma State's first season under Bob Simmons (1995) began with only two wins in nine attempts. Beginning with a 12-0 win against Oklahoma at Norman on November 11, OSU's football fortunes have soared. Oklahoma State has won 16 of its last 28 and 10 of its last 15. Three of OSU's last 12 losses have been in overtime and two others by 10 points or less.
BIG 12 COMPARISON -- Since the Big 12 Conference began actual competition in 1996, Oklahoma State has the sixth-best overall mark in the league. OSU's 14-11 record is just behind Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

THE BIG 12 LAST WEEK -- It was another impressive week for the Big 12 Conference. Seven league teams posted non-conference victories, including Iowa State, which handed Iowa a 27-9 loss. Kansas State, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Texas A&M all posted non-league victories. On the other side of the ledger, league schools lost three times, all on the road, including OSU's loss at Tulsa, Texas' loss at UCLA and Baylor's loss at Oregon State. In the one conference game played Saturday, Kansas lost at Missouri by a 41-23 margin.
HOME OPENERS -- Oklahoma State will be looking to win its third straight home opener when the Cowboys entertain Mississippi State on Saturday night. OSU is 2-1 in home openers under Bob Simmons, the only setback a 64-21 decision to eventual national champion Nebraska in the first game of the 1995 season. Over the past 30 seasons, OSU has a 23-7 record in home openers.

Game Three Opponent ... Mississippi State
WELCOME BACK, BULLDOGS -- It's been 27 years since Oklahoma State has faced Mississippi State on the football field, but the teams will renew their brief series Saturday night on Lewis Field. MSU's last trip to Stillwater was the second of a two-game, home-and-home series played between the schools in 1970 and 1971. OSU won in '71 by a 26-7 margin after losing the year before in Starkville by a 14-13 count. Oklahoma State is scheduled to play the Bulldogs in Starkville next season.
THINGS HAVE CHANGED -- 27 years ago, when Mississippi State last visited Lewis Field, the landscape was a bit different. Floyd Gass was entering his third season as O-State's football coach and second as the school's athletic director. Since '71, OSU has had five different head football coaches and the same number of athletic directors. Mississippi State was entering its fifth season under head coach Charley Shira, who was the SEC's Coach of the Year in 1970. MSU has had four head coaches since its last visit to Stillwater.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS -- Mississippi State finished the 1997 season with a 7-4 record and missed the SEC's Western Division title by just two games. Included among MSU's victims a year ago were Kentucky, South Carolina and Central Florida, and MSU earned impressive road victories over Alabama and Auburn. The Bulldogs returned 58 lettermen and 13 starters from that team and will bring a 2-0 record into Saturday night's game against Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs are clearly one of the best teams in the SEC and coming off a winning season that was not rewarded with a bowl game.
COACH JACKIE SHERRILL -- One of the most successful coaches in college football is beginning his eighth season at Mississippi State. In 20-plus seasons as a Division I-A head coach, Sherrill has won nearly 150 games and coached in 11 bowl games. In seven seasons in Starkville, he has guided the Bulldogs to four winning seasons, including a 7-4 record a year ago and an 8-4 mark in 1994, when the Bulldogs finished ranked 24th in the country after losing to North Carolina State in the Peach Bowl. Sherrill spent seven seasons at Texas A&M, winning nine or more games three times and guiding the Aggies to top 15 national finishes in 1985, 1986 and 1987. He had three straight 11-1 seasons at Pittsburgh, where he was a combined 50-9-1 in five years.
SHERRILL VS. OSU -- Mississippi State's head coach has faced Oklahoma State only twice previously, both when he was at Texas A&M. Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys defeated Sherrill's Aggies in College Station, 34-15 in 1983. Texas A&M made a return trip to Stillwater in 1988 where Barry Sanders led OSU to a 52-15 win.
THE OSU CONNECTION -- Six coaches who served as assistants to Jackie Sherrill have Oklahoma State connections. Jimmy Johnson and Pat Jones, OSU's head coaches from 1979-1994, worked for Sherrill at Pittsburgh. Dave Wannstedt and Tony Wise, who served on Johnson's OSU staff, also worked for Sherrill at Pitt and Denver Johnson, who was on Jones' OSU staff, was also on Sherrill's staff at Mississippi State in 1993 and 1994.

NON-CONFERENCE STREAK ALIVE -- Oklahoma State will put a 12-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents on the line when the Cowboys face Mississippi State Saturday night. OSU has not lost at home to a non-league opponent since Sept. 21, 1991, when TCU claimed a 24-21 victory.

NEXT WEEK -- Oklahoma State has the week off from game competition as the Pokes get ready to head for Kansas City and an October 3 date with Nebraska. Accordingly, there will not be a media luncheon next Monday.
OSU NOTES -- Oklahoma State's lack of home games during the first six weeks of its schedule is not totally unique, but you have to go back a few years to find anything similar. Several times in the last three decades the Cowboys have had just two home games in the first six weeks. Back in 1968, however, OSU opened with four straight road games and played just once (Oct. 26) at home until the first week of November. By the way, the '68 Cowboys finished 3-7 and won just one of six on the road ... Mississippi State will be OSU's home-opening opponent for the second time. The Bulldogs opened OSU's home schedule back in 1971 and left town with a 26-7 loss.
CHALOUPKA PROVIDES A SPARK - Junior QB Chris Chaloupka saw his first playing time as a quarterback (he played at Kansas as a kick holder) in the Tulsa game, and he made the most of his opportunity. Chaloupka directed OSU on scoring drives of 96 and 87 yards and completed nine of 14 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown, the seventh TD toss of his career.
HOWELL'S FIRST CATCH A BIG ONE - Sophomore WR Ethan Howell certainly made the first reception of his collegiate career count. Chaloupka and Howell connected on a 64-yard pass in the fourth quarter at Tulsa; it was Howell's first-ever catch, and it was OSU's longest pass play since Gary Porter hit Shannon Culver for an 80-yard gainer against Missouri in 1992. Howell and Chaloupka weren't finished, though; on the next two plays, they connected on passes of 10 and 21 yards, leading to Brian Aikins' one-yard score on the next play.
RIVERS EARNS FIRST CATCH, SCORES - Like Howell, redshirt freshman TE Marcellus Rivers earned the first pass reception of his career in the Tulsa game. Rivers later made a nice catch of a Chaloupka pass at the back of the end zone for OSU's second touchdown of the night.
WILD, WILD WEST - Junior LB Troy West made quite an impact in his first game as a Cowboy, picking off two crucial Kansas passes. The first interception of his career came in the first quarter, and he returned it 30 yards for OSU's second touchdown of the day. He became the first OSU player to return an interception for a score since Kevin Williams took one back 40 yards against Colorado last year. West came up with the game's clinching play in the fourth quarter, when a pass tipped by junior LB Kenyatta Wright bounced into West's hands. That pickoff led to OSU's final touchdown of the day. West, who recorded one of OSU's two sacks at Tulsa, is tied for fifth in the NCAA rankings in interceptions with one per game.
WRIGHT PERFORMS AS EXPECTED - Junior LB Kenyatta Wright, a preseason candidate for the Butkus Award, has lived up to his billing in OSU's first two games. Wright leads the Cowboys in tackles for loss with four and in sacks with two. Wright led OSU in tackles with six at Kansas and recorded five tackles against Tulsa.
THOMPSON PROVIDES SECONDARY LEADERSHIP - Senior FS Ricky Thompson was OSU's most active defensive player in the Tulsa game, leading the team with 10 tackles, including seven unassisted stops and a tackle for loss. For the season, Thompson has 12 tackles, two for losses.
LINDSAY AVOIDS SOPH SLUMP - Sophomore QB Tony Lindsay was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1997, and although he had a disappointing night at Tulsa, his play in OSU's season opener would seem to indicate he'll continue his success. Lindsay scored the 10th and 11th touchdowns of his career against the Jayhawks, including a 51-yard scramble for OSU's first score and a six-yard run for the Cowboys' game-clinching TD. The 51-yard touchdown is OSU's longest rushing TD since R.W. McQuarters ran for a 56-yard TD against Missouri last season.
TAILBACK TANDEM - OSU's tailback duo of junior Nathan Simmons and sophomore Jamaal Fobbs combined to rush for over 1,500 yards in 1997, and the pair got off to a good start with the season opener at Kansas. Simmons carried 13 times for 69 yards, including a 62-yard run to set up OSU's third touchdown. His long dash, which came on the first play of the second half, is OSU's longest rush since 1995, when David Thompson went for a 91-yard run against Kansas State (like Simmons, Thompson did not score on his long gainer). Fobbs gained 50 yards on 15 carries and scored shortly after Simmons' 62-yarder for the fourth touchdown of the sophomore's career. Despite a subpar performance at Tulsa, the pair still made some noise. Simmons scored OSU's first touchdown - the sixth of his career - and Fobbs led the Cowboys with 13 carries for 56 yards.
FOURTH-DOWN SUCCESS CONTINUES - OSU converted 12 of 17 fourth-down attempts last season, one shy of the school record, and that trend continued in the Kansas game. The Cowboys went for it twice in Lawrence and were successful both times. Both attempts extended drives that eventually went for scores. Last season, eight of OSU's 12 successful fourth-down conversions extended scoring drives. OSU was successful on one of two fourth-down tries at Tulsa.
OUR BALL - After holding onto the ball for 36:14 at Kansas, OSU had won the time-of-possession battle in 13 straight regular-season games, a streak that was snapped in Tulsa's victory over OSU. The Cowboys' record during the 13-game streak was 10-3.
OUR BALL, PART II - OSU ranked sixth in the nation with a plus-13 turnover margin in 1997, and the takeaway trend continued at Kansas. In addition to West's two interceptions, the Cowboys recovered two fumbles, one by Zac Akin and one by Taber LeBlanc; OSU turned the ball over just once against the Jayhawks. Although it turned the ball over four times to Tulsa's two last week, OSU maintains a plus-one turnover margin for the season, ranked 37th in the nation.
CLOSURE ON OPENERS - The Cowboys' victory at Kansas gives OSU a 56-36-5 record in season openers. The Cowboys, who defeated Southwest Missouri State at home in 1996 and Iowa State on the road last year, have won three straight lid-lifters and won back-to-back conference openers for the first time since 1987 and 1988. The Iowa State and Kansas games mark the first time in school history that OSU has opened consecutive conference seasons on the road and won both games. OSU last played consecutive league openers on the road in 1988 (a victory at Colorado) and 1989 (a loss at Oklahoma).
NOTING THE COWBOYS - Junior FB Jeremy Halferty earned the first start of his career in the Kansas game and responded with his first touchdown ... Kansas' 13 first-quarter points were the most OSU has given up in a first quarter since Missouri scored 14 on Oct. 26, 1996 ... Kansas' fumble return for a first-quarter score was the first against OSU since Sept. 14, 1991, when Arizona State took a Cowboy fumble 71 yards for a touchdown ... Since the Cowboys defeated Southwest Missouri State 45-7 in the 1995 lid-lifter ... The Cowboys snapped a six-game losing streak against Kansas and a 12-game skid against schools from the state of Kansas ... Tulsa's 35 points are the most against the Cowboys in a non-conference game since Wyoming defeated OSU 45-25 in 1995 ... Senior FB Brian Aikins' fourth-quarter touchdown at TU was the eighth of his career and his first this season ... Junior PK Tim Sydnes' string of successful PAT attempts was snapped at 32 in the Tulsa game.
