The agreement, announced Friday at a press conference in Kansas City, is conditional upon the finalization and signing of the contract to include a binding guarantee of $1.3 million for Oklahoma State's participation.
The press conference at Arrowhead was attended by officials from both schools as well as Carl Peterson, President, General Manager and CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs; Howard Wilson, COO of the Western Star Trucks Parts Division; Jennifer Hoffman, President of the OSU Student Government Association; and Joe Haney, Vice President of the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce. The press conference was also attended by Kansas City Mayor Emmanuel Cleaver.
OSU Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips said the agreement to move the game was made only after consultation with student leaders and people who were involved in the recent use tax issue in the City of Stillwater.
"We are delighted to be involved in a game of such historic measure," Phillips said. "This will be the first Division I game ever played at Arrowhead. Furthermore, we believe that as football continues to develop we must broaden our horizons and provide as much nation-wide exposure as possible."
Oklahoma State's Athletic Director said the dollars generated by the game will go toward equity enhancement, particulary a new facility for the Cowgirl Softball program.
Haney said that long-term benefits clearly support the game in Kansas City. "The Stillwater business community recognizes that losing the game has a short term impact, but clearly, for the long-term success of the athletic program at OSU, playing this game in Kansas City is the right thing to do."
Rhett Minson, Vice President of the OSU Student Government Association, said the SGA views the game as a great opportunity for OSU students. "This is a great opportunity for OSU and students of OSU. There are a lot of positives, like nationwide exposure and a way to generate additional revenues. Plus, Kansas City is a fun town and will be a great road trip for OSU students," Minson said.
Peterson said the event would be a benefit to Kansas City and the Chiefs as well. "The Kansas City Chiefs are very excited to be a part of this Classic. We will do everything possible to make this a success. This is obviously a great event for Kansas City."
The early October game with Nebraska is one of the highlights of OSU's 1998 grid schedule that features five attractive home games, including Oklahoma and Texas A&M.
OSU is scheduled to open the 1998 season on September 12 at Tulsa. The Cowboys then play Mississippi State and Southwestern Louisiana on back-to-back weekends in Stillwater. Following the Nebraska game, OSU faces Texas Tech and Kansas State on the road before returning home for games against OU and Texas A&M. The Cowboys close out the season with games at Texas and Kansas and a home finale against Baylor.
