Cowboys Put 4-0 Record to Test

COWBOYS PUT 4-0 MARK ON THE LINE AGAINST TEXAS -- Oklahoma State, unbeaten after four games for the first time in almost a decade, will put that perfect mark on the line this week when the Cowboys entertain Texas. Kickoff at Lewis Field is set for 11:30 a.m. OSU is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 Conference play. Texas comes to Stillwater with an overall mark of 2-1. Saturday will be the first league game of the season for the Longhorns.
HOW'S THIS FOR A TWO-GAME STRETCH -- Over the next two weeks, Oklahoma State will host two of college football's most successful teams. This week, Texas will play on Lewis Field, and next week (Oct. 11), Colorado comes to Stillwater. Over the last three years, OSU's next two football opponents have combined for 57 victories, six bowl appearances, three conference championships and three second-place conference finishes.
HORNS MAKING FIRST-EVER VISIT TO STILLWATER -- Saturday will be the first time the University of Texas has ever played football at Oklahoma State. The teams have met 11 times previously, with 10 of those games in Austin and one (1916) in San Antonio. Not only is this Texas' first visit to Stillwater; it is the first time the Longhorns have played in the state of Oklahoma since November 18, 1922, when they played Oklahoma in Norman.
TICKETS -- It will be Young Alumni Weekend, FCA Day and Alumni Band Day at Oklahoma State when Texas visits Lewis Field, and tickets are still available. The Athletic Ticket Office in Gallagher-Iba Arena is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the toll-free number to order tickets is 1-800-522-6858.
ON THE AIR -- Saturday's Big 12 bash between OSU and Texas will be televised live by Fox Sports Net as part of the weekly Big 12 Conference syndicated package. In Oklahoma, the game will be aired on KWTV Channel 9 in Oklahoma City and KOTV Channel 6 in Tulsa. Ron Thulin, Dave Lapham and Jim Knox are the talent for this week's game. Saturday will mark the second time this season the Cowboys have appeared on television. The season opener at Iowa State was also televised by Fox Sports Net. The game will also be broadcast live on the OSU Radio Network. KWTV Sports Director Bill Teegins is the radio voice of OSU Football, and he is joined in the booth by Tom Dirato. The OSU-Texas broadcast will begin at 10:30 a.m., with a one-hour pregame show. The OSU Radio Network is a division of Learfield Communications in Jefferson City, Missouri.
FIVE AND COUNTING -- Oklahoma State's 38-7 win over Northeast Louisiana Saturday night was the fifth straight victory for the Cowboys, including the final-game win over Baylor in 1996 and four straight to open the '97 season. It is the second-longest winning streak at OSU since a seven-game streak that included the final three games of 1987 and the first four of 1988 and equals the seventh-longest win streak of all time. OSU's all-time longest winning streak is 13 games over a three-year stretch (1944-45-46). The Cowboys have two eight-game streaks, a seven-game streak and two six-game winning streaks.
The Cowboys defense has made some big plays to help the team get off to a great start.
1997 OPENING A SMASH -- Oklahoma State's 4-0 start in 1997 compares to the best in school history. Only 10 other times in the 96-year history of football at Oklahoma State have the Cowboys started the season with four or more straight victories. The 1945 team tops the list. That team, of course, was unbeaten, finishing with a 9-0 record. Four other teams (1912, 1914, 1944 and 1987) started the season with five straight victories while five other teams (1975, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1988) started with four straight victories. OSU STREAK TOPS IN BIG 12 -- Oklahoma State's five-game winning streak is the longest current streak in the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska has the second-longest streak at four while Texas A&M and Kansas State have current winning streaks at three games apiece.

Penn State has the longest current streak at eight, and OSU's streak of five straight wins is currently tied for fifth in the country. Ten teams in the country have current winning streaks of five or more. Oregon, which went into Saturday with a six-game streak, lost at Stanford. COWBOYS LAST WEEK -- Oklahoma State posted a 38-7 win over Northeast Louisiana in the final non-conference game of the season on Lewis Field. The Cowboys scored 28 unanswered first-half points and were never headed as they posted their fourth straight win of the season. Tailback Nathan Simmons rushed for 106 yards on 21 carries and became the first back to rush for 100 yards against the NLU defense this season. Tight end Alonzo Mayes caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown, and the Pokes took advantage of the outstanding play of R.W. McQuarters on both defense and special teams. McQuarters had three punt returns for 129 yards and set up two touchdowns while recovering a fumble that led to yet another Oklahoma State touchdown. OSU's defense was again solid, despite allowing a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Cowboys had not allowed a touchdown in seven quarters before NLU scored with 2:53 remaining.
NON-LEAGUE SWEEP COMPLETE -- Oklahoma State's 38-7 win over Northeast Louisiana Saturday night completed a three-game sweep of non-conference opponents for the Cowboys in 1997. It also extended OSU's string of consecutive non-conference victories to seven. Oklahoma State has not lost a non-league game since September 30, 1995, when the Cowboys lost at Tennessee by a 31-0 margin. O-State's seven-game string includes wins over Hawaii (24-20), Southwest Missouri State (23-20), Tulsa (30-9), Utah State (31-17), Southwestern Louisiana (31-7), Fresno State (35-0) and Northeast Louisiana (38-7). With their seven-game streak, the Cowboys are still seven non-league victories from equaling the all-time record for consecutive wins in non-conference games (14).
Coach Simmons hopes to lead OSU past Texas with a complete team effort .
HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS -- The steady hands guiding Oklahoma State's football fortunes belong to Head Coach Bob Simmons. He is quietly accomplishing what many said could not be done. He is building OSU's football program into one that is respected and competitive. Four games into his third season, Simmons has his Cowboys unbeaten and headed for a Big 12 South Division showdown with powerhouse Texas. Simmons became OSU's 20th Head Football Coach in December of 1994. He inherited a program that had won only 18 times in the previous 66 games. He led OSU to four victories in his first season, including a 12-0 shutout win over Oklahoma at Norman and a win at Missouri that snapped an 18-game winless skein in conference play. In his second season, Simmons guided OSU to five wins, and when the Pokes closed the year with a convincing win over Baylor on Lewis Field, it was a sign of positive things to come. The Pokes have opened the 1997 season with four straight victories and Simmons will carry a career record fo 13-14 into this week's game against Texas. The Oklahoma State coach has been associated with winning at every stop along his career. He spent seven seasons on Bill McCartney's staff at Colorado and was part of seven bowl teams, three conference championships and a national championship. BOB SIMMONS ON RADIO AND TV -- Oklahoma State's Head Football Coach can be seen each week on the Bob Simmons Television Show. The 30-minute show, hosted by Paul Blair, airs on Sunday night at 10:30 on Oklahoma City station KOCB (34). It also airs on the TCI Cable System in Tulsa on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. and on Fox Sports Southwest on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Bob Simmons radio call-in show airs each Thursday on the Cowboy Radio Network from 6:05 until 7 p.m., hosted by Tom Dirato. Coach Simmons is also featured on the OSU Football Show each Tuesday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on WWLS (640).
LAST 18 GAMES EQUAL SUCCESS FOR OSU -- Oklahoma State's football record over the past 18 games reflects the turnaround that Bob Simmons promised when he took over the program almost three years ago. Since the 10th week of the 1995 season, Oklahoma State has played 18 games and won 11 of those. That ranks among the best runs of success that Oklahoma State has had on the football field. If you use 18 games as a minimum, there have been only five other eras in Cowboy football that have been better.

This Week's Opponent
TEXAS -- The Longhorns make their first-ever visit to Stillwater with an overall record of 2-1 and fresh from a 38-31 victory over Rice last Saturday in Houston. The only blemish on the Longhorns' record in 1997, so far, is a 66-3 loss to UCLA in Austin. The Horns were 8-5 last year, won the South Division of the Big 12 and defeated Nebraska in the first-ever Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship game. Texas returned 43 lettermen and 14 starters from last years team. Texas' incredible football tradition includes three national championships, one Big 12 championship and 25 Southwest Conference championships.
HEAD COACH JOHN MACKOVIC -- In his sixth season at Texas, Mackovic brings a UT record of 39-22-2 into today's game against Oklahoma State. He has guided Texas to three straight winning seasons, including a 10-2-1 mark in 1995, and the Longhorns have been ranked in the top 25 in each of the last three final AP and Coaches' Polls. His collegiate record, including stops at Wake Forest, Illinois and Texas, is 83-58-3.
TEXAS LAST WEEK -- The Longhorns rallied from a 14-0 deficit but had to hang on at the end to outlast Rice 38-31 in Houston. The star of Texas' offensive show Saturday was Ricky Williams, who rushed for 249 yards and scored a school-record five touchdowns against the Owls. Williams carried the ball 28 times and scored on runs of 9, 48, 4, 25 and 15 yards. Rice was able to roll up 452 rushing yards against Texas but was limited to just 26 passing yards. THE TEXAS SERIES -- Saturday will mark the 12th time Oklahoma State and Texas have met in football and the Longhorns have controlled the series. Texas has won 10 while losing just once to the Cowboys and the Horns have won five straight dating back to a 13-8 OSU win in 1944. All of the OSU-UT games have been played south of the Red River. Oklahoma State is 1-9 vs. Texas in Austin and 0-1 vs. the Longhorns in San Antonio.
MARGIN HAS BEEN HEALTHY -- Since Oklahoma State's last and only victory over Texas in 1944, the average of margin for Texas has been healthy. In the last five meetings, Texas has averaged 41.8 points per game (209 points) and allowed Oklahoma State an average of 4 points per game. That's an average margin of 37.8 points per Texas win and the closest game was a 19-0 shutout in 1967.
THE LAST WIN -- Oklahoma State's only triumph, to date, over Texas came in the seventh game of the 1944 season when the Cowboys of Jim Lookabaugh were headed for a Cotton Bowl appearance against TCU. Bob Fenimore led OSU to a 13-8 victory over the Longhorns in Austin. Fenimore rushed for 101 yards on 26 carries and passed for 113 yards on six-of-nine. Texas outgained Oklahoma State 387 to 310 in total offense and had 16 first downs compared to Oklahoma State's 6, but the visitors hung on for the victory. OSU would end its regular season the next week with a win over Oklahoma and defeat TCU in the Cotton Bowl.
LAST YEAR -- Texas took advantage of five Oklahoma State turnovers to post a 71-14 win over the Cowboys in Austin. The 23rd-ranked Longhorns had a 10-7 lead in the first quarter when Ricky Williams scored on a 23-yard touchdown. The Longhorns would score 41 points in the first half and scored on 11 consecutive possessions to drop OSU to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play. David Thompson was one of Oklahoma State's bright spots. He rushed for 153 yards on 20 carries and scored on a 54-yard run in the second quarter.

ALONZO GETS UNTRACKED, ADDS TO CAREER NUMBERS -- Senior tight end Alonzo Mayes has had 10 receptions for 136 yards in the past two games. Those totals now give him 1,129 career receiving yards and 77 career receptions. He is the 14th OSU player to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards and the 15th Cowboy to register 70 or more career receptions. Mayes currently ranks 10th on the career receiving yards list and 10th on the career receptions list.
MORE ON MAYES -- The Oklahoma City senior was named a preseason All-American by virtually every publication and is projected as one of the top pro prospects in the country early in 1997. Over the past two-plus seasons, he has nine games with 50 or more yards and two with 125-plus. His top two statistical games at Oklahoma State so far are 149 yards on six receptions against Missouri in 1996 and 125 yards on 10 receptions against Kansas in 1995. During his OSU career, he is averaging 14.7 yards per reception and has had 18 multiple reception games. With four touchdown receptions in 1997, Mayes has already equaled his single-season best of four in 1995.

EVEN MORE ON MAYES -- He is on the early-season watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, which goes to the country's top receiver. He is one of 10 players included in the Burger King Players to Watch list, sponsored by the AFCA ... After a season-best day against Fresno State (six receptions, 94 yards, two touchdowns) plus scoring a touchdown against Northeast Louisiana, Mayes leads the team in receptions (14), receiving yards (181) and receiving touchdowns (four). He has scored four times in the last three games after going the previous four games without a touchdown ... Mayes has caught at least one pass in 14 consecutive games and 23 of the last 26.
McQUARTERS: THREE-WAY STAR -- To say that junior FS R.W. McQuarters does a little of everything for OSU is a vast understatement this season. McQuarters has started each game in three different positions -- free safety, wide receiver and kick returner. In the past two games, McQuarters has picked off a pass; recovered a fumble; caught a 58-yard touchdown pass, OSU's longest of the season; and recorded three punt returns over 30 yards, including last week's career-best 82-yarder, the sixth-best return in school history. He ranks third in the Big 12 and 10th in the nation in punt returns (15.2 per return), and the 58-yard scoring strike from Tony Lindsay against Fresno State is the longest pass play at OSU since 1993.
SIMMONS SPARKLES -- After missing the Southwestern Louisiana game with an ankle injury, sophomore TB Nathan Simmons returned to the lineup for the Fresno State game. He regained full form against Northeast Louisiana, rushing for a career-best 106 yards and one touchdown to lead the Cowboys' season-best 274-yard rushing output. Simmons is tied with Tony Lindsay for the team lead in rushing touchdowns (three). He is ranked eighth in the Big 12 and 43rd in the nation in rushing (88.67 ypg).
FABULOUS FOBBS -- Redshirt freshman TB Jamaal Fobbs earned the first start of his career and set a school freshman rushing record with his 217-yard effort against Southwestern Louisiana. Fobbs broke the record previously held by Thurman Thomas, who gained 206 yards in 1984 against Kansas State. Fobbs leads the team in rushing (402 yards) and is second in pass receptions (nine for 102 yards). With 402 yards through three games, Fobbs already ranks fifth all-time among OSU freshman running backs and is well ahead of the pace set by the backs ahead of him, Andre Richardson (116 yards through three games and 774 total), Thurman Thomas (148 and 688), Rafael Denson (136 and 568) and David Thompson (21 and 466). Fobbs is ranked fifth in the Big 12 and 29th in the nation in rushing with 100.5 yards per game.
TURNOVERS -- OSU's new "46" defense has forced 12 turnovers this season, and the Cowboy offense has turned those into eight touchdowns. OSU scored just twice off turnovers in 1996, and both were field goals. The Cowboys are now plus-eight in turnovers this year; OSU has not finished a season in the black in turnover margin since 1993. The six turnovers by Southwestern Louisiana were the most by an OSU opponent since 1993. The Cowboys' turnover margin of +2.00 per game ranks second in the Big 12 and fifth in the nation.
KEVIN WILLIAMS: DEFENSIVE BIG PLAY MAN -- Senior CB Kevin Williams has picked off a pass in three of the Cowboys' first four games; since 1993, only R.W. McQuarters (in 1995) had recorded three interceptions in a single season prior to Williams' accomplishment early this year. Williams produced the biggest play of the Iowa State game with his pickoff to set up OSU's game-winning touchdown; his second-quarter interception against Northeast Louisiana was the sixth of his career. Williams is tied for sixth in the nation with 0.75 interceptions per game.
DEFENSE SHOWS MAJOR IMPROVEMENT -- One consistent through OSU's first three games has been its ability to stop the run. The Cowboy defense battered Fresno State into minus-20 yards rushing Sept. 13, the second-best rush defense in OSU history. The Cowboys are currently ranked second nationally with a 48 yards-per-game average in rushing defense and third in scoring defense, averaging just seven points allowed per contest. The shutout of Fresno State marked OSU's first at home since 1987, and the 137 yards total offense by FSU was the best defensive performance by an OSU team since 1984. The Cowboys were 2:56 away from a shutout against Northeast Louisiana; OSU has not recorded back-to-back whitewashings since 1934.
IN THE RED ZONE -- Oklahoma State has been "in the red zone" 19 times this season and has scored touchdowns after 14 of those drives, 73.6 percent of the time, and each of the last two games has seen OSU end the contest with a kneel-down inside the opponent's 20. This year's success in scoring position is an improvement over last season's 69.4 percent touchdown-scoring rate when in the red zone.
QB TANDEM CONTINUES TO PRODUCE -- OSU's two regular quarterbacks, sophomore Chris Chaloupka and redshirt freshman Tony Lindsay, were virtually interchangeable in their record-setting performance against Fresno State. The pair combined for a school-record five touchdown passes; Chaloupka threw three, but Lindsay's 58-yarder to R.W. McQuarters was the season's long gain. Along with junior QB Joe Phears, who entered the game in the fourth quarter, the tandem completed 19 of 22 passes for 271 yards, the Cowboys' best yardage output through the air in five years. Lindsay (151.3) and Chaloupka (149.8) rank 2-3 in the Big 12 in passing efficiency.
OSU'S DAVIS ONE OF THE BEST -- Oklahoma State senior P Jason Davis, coming off one of the best seasons in OSU history, is well on his way to another superb year. In this season's first three games, Davis is averaging 46.3 yards per kick, well above the OSU single-season record of 45.5 and ranked second in the Big 12 and seventh in the nation. Of his 22 punts, 17 have gone for more than 40 yards and nine have gone for more than 50. Currently averaging 44.7 yards per kick (81 punts for 3617 yards) in his career, Davis is on pace to best the career punting record of 44.4 yards per kick established by Greg Ivy in 1994-95. OSU is currently ranked third in the NCAA in net punting (44.1 yards per kick).
ROAD AND OVERALL SUCCESS -- This season marks the fifth time in school history -- and the first since 1954 -- that OSU has opened a season with two games away from home and won them both. The Cowboys are now 4-0 for the first time since 1988 and have won back-to-back road games for the first time since 1989, when OSU defeated Kansas and Missouri on successive weekends. The Cowboys have won seven straight games against non-conference opponents and are 1-0 in conference play for the first time since 1988.
THOMPSON LEADS DEFENSIVE EFFORT -- Junior DB Ricky Thompson had an active night at Southwestern Louisiana, recording 13 tackles -- 10 unassisted -- and one sack in the victory. After again leading the tackle brigade against Northeast Louisiana, Thompson is now the team's overall leader with 28 tackles, including a team-best 9 unassisted stops.
NOTING THE COWBOYS -- OSU's 451 yards of total offense against Fresno State was a season high; the Cowboys have gone over 300 yards total offense in 10 straight games ... Sophomore DT Cortney Mallory intercepted a second-quarter pass at USL; it was the first pick of his career ... The Cowboys' 28-point halftime lead against Northeast Louisiana was the biggest since a 38-7 bulge against Southwest Missouri State in 1993; the 35-point margin of victory over Fresno State is the biggest since a 45-7 win over Southwest Missouri State in 1993 ... Junior FB Brian Aikins' second-quarter touchdown against Northeast Louisiana was his second of the season and the fifth of his career ... OSU has topped the 30-point mark in three consecutive games, the first time that has happened since the 1988 season.

Radio Affiliates for 1997 Cowboy Football Network Every game of the 1997 Cowboy Football Season can be heard throughout the state of Oklahoma on the Cowboy Radio Network. OSU football will cover the state like a blanket when 30 stations join the Network, from Altus to Bartlesville, from Guymon to Idabel. KJOJ of Spring, Texas, is the sole carrier of Cowboy Football in the state of Texas. KWTV Sports Director Bill Teegins returns for his seventh season as the play-by-play voice of the Cowboys, while Tom Dirato, Coordinator of Radio and Television for the OSU Athletic Department, will provide color analysis.
