OSU TRAVELS TO TEXAS A&M Oklahoma State takes to the road this week as the Cowboys try to recover from last weeks loss to Kansas State and stay within striking distance of the South Division title. The Cowboys face Texas A&M Saturday afternoon in College Station with the game scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CDT. Three of OSUs final five games are on the road, beginning with this weeks game at A&M. The Cowboys also must travel to Baylor and Oklahoma.
LOOKING TO SNAP ANOTHER STREAK When Oklahoma State upended Texas Tech earlier this season in Stillwater, it snapped a four-game losing streak to the Red Raiders. The Pokes will have something similar on their minds when they travel to College Station this week. OSU has lost three straight to Texas A&M since the two schools became members of the Big 12 Conference. A&M has beaten OSU twice in Stillwater and once in College Station since 1996. OSUs last win over the Aggies was in 1988 by a 52-15 score. OSUs last win over Texas A&M in College Station came in 1983 by a 34-15 margin.
COWBOYS LOOK FOR SECOND-HALF SURGE The second half of the 1999 season officially begins this week with five of the six teams in the South still in the hunt for the title and a date with the North champion in San Antonio in early December. While Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech sit atop the South standings at 3-1, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are just behind. The Cowboys have played one fewer league game than the others in the title chase. A second-half surge by the Cowboys would not only give them a shot at the title, it would put them in a position to earn a second bowl trip in three years.
RECORDS Oklahoma State is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 Conference play, ahead of this weeks game against Texas A&M. The Cowboys won their first two of the 99 season before losing to Mississippi State and Nebraska, both on the road. OSU rebounded for a 41-21 win over Texas Tech on Lewis Field but fell to sixth-ranked Kansas State last week. Texas A&M will enter this weeks game with an overall record of 5-2 and a league mark of 2-2. The Aggies will no doubt be smarting from a 51-6 loss at Oklahoma over the weekend.
RANKINGS Texas A&M will be the second straight nationally ranked opponent for the Cowboys and the fourth ranked team in OSUs first seven opponents of 1999. The Aggies dropped to 18th in this weeks Coaches Poll after their loss at Oklahoma on Saturday. Texas A&M is 22nd in this weeks Associated Press poll. Oklahoma State is yet to crack either major Top 25 poll this season but did receive votes through the early weeks of the season.
ON THE ROAD Oklahoma State will depart for College Station early Friday afternoon on a Miami Air charter and hold a light workout on Kyle Field. The Cowboys will headquarter at the Del Lago Resort and Conference Center in Montgomery, Texas. OSU will depart for Stillwater approximately one hour after Saturdays game.
ROAD MEDIA POLICIES Oklahoma States Friday workout in College Station is closed to the media. Players are available through Wednesday but are off limits from Thursday until after Saturdays game. Head Coach Bob Simmons is available prior to OSUs Friday afternoon workout. Please contact Steve Buzzard in the Athletic Media Relations Office for more information.
ON THE AIR Saturdays game will not be televised either live or delayed. The game was originally placed in ABCs six-day selection window, but the network opted for Colorado-Oklahoma. The game will be broadcast live on the Cowboy Radio Network with Bill Teegins and Tom Dirato calling the action. The Cowboy Network is a division of Learfield Sports. The network pregame show begins one hour before kickoff and ends with a live call-in show with coach Bob Simmons. The Cowboy Radio Network features 30-stations that cover all of Oklahoma and parts of Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas.
TRICK OR TREAT AND MOVE THOSE CLOCKS BACK Its not only Halloween weekend, its time to move those clocks back this coming Saturday. Most of the country reverts to Standard Time at 2 a.m. Sunday. Since 1976, Oklahoma State is 4-3 in games played when Halloween fell on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday).
OSU LAST WEEK Oklahoma States Homecoming game with Kansas State began with visions of a victory over the seventh-ranked Wildcats but turned into a disappointing loss. Two first-quarter rushing touchdowns by quarterback Tony Lindsay and a 24-yard pass from Lindsay to Ethan Howell gave OSU a 21-0 lead over Kansas State with 13:24 to play in the second quarter. Kansas State pulled even, however, just before halftime and surged past the Pokes with a potent offense and a stingy second-half defense. KSU rolled up 520 yards of total offense, but almost 300 of that came in the second half. Lindsay, OSUs junior quarterback who had been on the bench with a knee injury since the season opener, returned to the starting lineup against Kansas State and played well. He passed for 130 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 33 yards on 17 carries. More importantly, he showed no signs of lingering side effects from the earlier injury.
HOMECOMING SELLOUT GREETS POKES Oklahoma States Homecoming game against Kansas State was witnessed by a Lewis Field sellout crowd of 48,500 and a regional television audience. While it was OSUs first sellout of the 1999 season, it continued a trend of increased attendance for the Cowboys. More than 44,000 were in attendance for Texas Tech and that followed a crowd in excess of 46,000 for Tulsa. Through four games of the 1999 home season, Oklahoma State is averaging 43,725 per game, and that is on track to be one of the highest season averages in OSU football history.
NOTE THE STADIUM CAPACITY The official capacity for OSUs Lewis Field is now 48,500. The capacity reduction is the result of construction of the new Athletic Center which took away seating in the east end zone.
OSU SCHEDULE ONE OF THE TOUGHEST Oklahoma States 1999 schedule was expected to be difficult and it has turned out to be just that. Two OSU opponents, Kansas State and Mississippi State, are still unbeaten seven weeks into the season, and both are ranked in the top eight in the country. Nebraska, a winner over OSU in Lincoln earlier this month, lost for the first time last week at Texas but is still 6-1 and ranked ninth by the coaches.
WHAT A STRETCH Beginning with OSUs Sept. 18 game at Mississippi State, the Cowboys have played four teams with a combined record of 24-4. Throw in OSUs next two opponents (Texas A&M and Texas) and the middle six teams on OSUs 99 schedule are currently 45-8. Five of the six are ranked in the Top 25.
UPDATING THE 1999 OPPOSITION Oklahoma States 1999 opponents have a combined record of 45-34 going into this weekends play. Two of OSUs 1999 opponents are still unbeaten after seven weeks of regular-season play.

For the eighth straight season, the Cowboys did not lose to a nonconference opponent on Lewis Field. the Pokes will start the 2000 season with a 16-game winning streak at home against nonleague foes.

HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS Oklahoma States football coach is six games into his fifth season and will be coaching his 53rd OSU game when the Cowboys travel to Texas A&M this week. Coach Simmons will bring a career mark of 25-27 into Saturdays game. Simmons came to Oklahoma State from Colorado, where he was assistant head coach for Bill McCartney. He guided OSU to a bowl game just three years into his tenure and was the 1997 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.
CONTRACT EXTENSION Earlier this season, one day before the Cowboys disposed of Tulsa on Lewis Field, the Oklahoma State Board of Regents approved a contract extension for Bob Simmons that will keep him as OSUs head football coach through the 2005 season.
COACH SIMMONS ON THE WWW Oklahoma States head coach recently launched his own web site (http: //www.bobsimmons.com), Bob Simmons Cowboy Corner. Portions of the proceeds from Simmons site go to the National Kidney Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc., and the OSU Foundation.
MILESTONES UNDER SIMMONS Oklahoma States football fortunes have soared since Simmons became the schools 20th head coach on Dec. 4, 1994. Below are just a few of those milestones.
When OSU defeated Texas Tech 41-21 this year, it was the first win over the Red Raiders since 1988, snapping a four-game losing streak.
OSU registered its first win under Coach Simmons on Sept. 16, 1995 when the Cowboys upended Southwest Missouri State 35-7 on Lewis Field.
When Simmons led the Cowboys to a 30-26 win over Missouri at Columbia on Oct. 21, 1995, it snapped a 20-game winless streak in conference play.
Two weeks after defeating Missouri at Columbia, the Cowboys defeated Oklahoma at Norman. It was OSUs first win over its in-state rival since 1976 and was a signal of things to come. O-State has defeated Oklahoma three of the four years since Simmons became head coach.
When Oklahoma State won at Iowa State in the 1997 season opener, it would be the start of a six-game winning streak and help guide the Cowboys to their first bowl season since 1988. OSU would win its first six games of the season, including back-to-back wins over Texas and Colorado.
Since overtime became vogue in college football in 1996, Oklahoma State has had more than its share of extra-period contests. Under Simmons, the Cowboys have gone into overtime four times, including a two-overtime thriller at Texas A&M two years ago and the nations first OT game in the 96 opener.
Since Bob Simmons took over the OSU reins in 1995, the Cowboys have faced 17 teams that were nationally ranked going into the game. Eight of those opponents were ranked in the top 10 when they faced Oklahoma State. In the last two seasons, Oklahoma State has defeated three opponents (Texas, Colorado and Mississippi State) that were nationally ranked.
Under Bob Simmons, Oklahoma State is 10-0 against nonconference competition on Lewis Field and 12-6 vs. nonleague opposition overall.
SIMMONS ON RADIO/TV Oklahoma States head football coach has shows on both television and radio each week through the 1999 season. The Bob Simmons Television Show will air Sunday at 10:30 p.m. on KOCB (34) in Oklahoma City. Other airings include Monday at 8:30 on KWEM (31) in Stillwater, Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Tulsa Cable Channel 9, Wednesday at 8:30 on KWEM (31) in Stillwater, and Thursday at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest. The Bob Simmons Radio Show airs each Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. along the Cowboy Radio Network.

Noting the Cowboys
LINDSAY BACK Junior quarterback Tony Lindsay returned to the Oklahoma State lineup last weekend after missing four games with a knee injury. Lindsay suffered the injury late in the first half of the season opener. He started against Kansas State Saturday and played most of the game. His return started with a bang. Lindsay scored two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and sparked the Cowboys to a 21-0 lead over Kansas State. For the game, he completed nine of 19 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown and rushed 17 times for 33 yards and two touchdowns.
BLACKWOOD HAS BEST DAY Tight end Bryan Blackwood had the best statistical day of his young OSU career against Kansas State. Blackwood, a junior-college All-American last season at NEO, had two catches against the Wildcats for 55 yards, including a 28-yard reception that was the longest by an OSU receiver. Through six games, Blackwood now has five catches for 87 yards.
EDWARDS OFF TO FAST START Senior defensive back Adam Edwards could be on the way to his best OSU season. Through six games, Edwards has 28 total tackles, and that is No. 2 on the defense to linebacker Dwayne Levels. Edwards was busy last week against Kansas State, logging eight tackles, breaking up a pass and grabbing his first interception of the season.
PORTER HAVING SOLID YEAR Oklahoma State defensive back Alvin Porter continues to have a season that should warrant consideration for All-Big 12 honors. Porter, who led the Cowboys defensive effort against Texas Tech two weeks ago, has impressive numbers through six games of the 1999 season. His 26 total tackles is third-best on the OSU defense and he leads the team in interceptions (3) and passes broken up (8).

NATHAN PASSES TURNER, BLACKMAN ON RUSHING LIST Tailback Nathan Simmons spent the summer of 1999 going through a vigorous rehab program for major knee surgery last December. Six games into his final OSU season, Simmons is on the verge of becoming the 13th player in Oklahoma State history to rush for 2,000 or more career yards. The son of head coach Bob Simmons, now has 1,892 career yards, just 108 yards shy of the 2,000 mark. He is 14th on the all-time OSU rushing list, 68 yards short of Andre Richardsons 13th-place mark of 1,960 yards.

SYDNES SCORING Senior kicker Tim Sydnes began the season sixth on the career scoring list and is quickly adding to those totals. Earlier this season against Tulsa, Sydnes connected on all five PATs and was a perfect three-of-three in the field goal department. He was the Big 12 Conference Specialty Player of the Week after that game. For the season, he has hit six of 11 field goals and 14 of 14 extra points. Through three-plus seasons, Sydnes has scored 239 points and trails No. 5 Thurman Thomas by 27 points. He is already the third-most-prolific kick scorer in school history, trailing only Cary Blanchard and Larry Roach.

LINEBACKERS PRODUCE There has been much said about Oklahoma States 1999 linebacker corps. Through six games of the 1999 season, this talented group has produced. Dwayne Levels is OSUs leading tackler through six games with 29 total stops. Senior Tarrell Knauls is fourth in total tackles with 24, and Kenyatta Wright is just behind with 23 total tackles. Wright also has three tackles for losses, one sack, two passes broken up and a fumble recovery.
RICHARDSON IS DOUBLE TROUBLE Another Cowboy worthy of All-Big 12 consideration as a punt returner is Terance Richardson. Richardson, with 330 yards on 24 returns through six games, is already tied for fourth on the season punt-return yardage list with David Hankins. Richardson needs 65 yards to move past Jim Spavital into third, 93 yards to move into second place past Bennie Goodwin, and 193 yards to move past R.W. McQuarters and establish a new single-season record for punt return yardage.
ALL-PURPOSE FOBBS Tailback Jamaal Fobbs is not only OSUs leading rusher through six games, he is No. 2 in receiving, and he is the Cowboys leading kickoff returner. On the ground, Fobbs has 322 yards on 63 carries. He is averaging 5.1 yards per carry and 53.7 yards per game. He has caught 12 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown and is averaging 10.9 yards per catch. He has returned 13 kicks for 296 yards, an average of 22.8 yards per return. Fobbs leads the Big 12 in all-purpose yardage with 154.0 yards per game.
FOBBS ON THE CAREER LIST With 322 yards through six games this season, Jamaal Fobbs now has 1,577 yards for his OSU career. He will go into this weeks game against Kansas State 18th on the career rushing list, having passed Bobby Cole, who had 1,506 for his OSU career.
AS FOR THE DEFENSIVE ENDS ... One of the early highlights of Oklahoma States 1999 season has been the play of the defensive ends. Zac Warner, Kevin Williams and Juqua Thomas have combined for 21 tackles behind the line, including 11 sacks. Thomas, a junior-college transfer from Northeastern A&M, leads the team with nine tackles for minus 52 yards and 3.5 sacks for minus 34 yards. Warner has seven tackles for minus 33 yards, and Williams has five for minus 21 yards.
NEXT WEEK Oklahoma State returns to Lewis Field to host Texas as the Cowboys start a two-game stretch that will wrap up the home schedule. After the Nov. 6 game against the Longhorns, OSU hosts Kansas on Nov. 13 in Senior Day. The Pokes then travel to Baylor and Oklahoma to close out the regular season.
DEFENSE PART ONE: TOTAL YARDAGE OSUs defense stopped almost everything in the season-opening victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cowboys allowed just 61 yards total offense, the second-lowest amount ever by an OSU opponent. The school-record total-defense performance came in 1947, when OSU held Kansas State to 29 yards. The Cowboys have continued to impress defensively throughout the season and currently rank 13th in the nation in total defense (290.3 ypg) and second in the Big 12.
DEFENSE PART TWO: AGAINST THE RUN The Cowboys held Tulsa, which had come into the game off consecutive 300-yard rushing performances dating to last season, to minus-20 yards on the ground, the second-lowest number ever recorded by an OSUopponent. The school record was the 33 yards in net losses suffered by Kansas State in 1980. OSU also stuffed Texas Techs Sammy Morris, who had gained 170 yards on the ground the previous week against Texas A&Ms stout defense, to just 40 yards on 16 carries. The Cowboys rank 26th nationally against the rush, allowing 112.5 yards per game.
DEFENSE PART THREE: AGAINST THE PASS OSUs secondary was widely believed to be its weakness in 1998. However, the first six games of 1999 have shown a change in that trend as OSUs opponents pass-efficiency rating is a mere 108.0, the 26th-lowest mark in the country. Part of the Cowboys stinginess against the pass has had to do with their quarterback pressure: OSU has recorded 18 sacks in six games.
NOTING THE COWBOYS Prior to the Texas Tech game, OSU had not scored twice in the first quarter in any game this season. But in the past two games, OSU has opened up with touchdowns on at least its first two possessions, and the Cowboys found the end zone on their first three possessions against Kansas State ... Senior WR Ethan Howell caught a 24-yard pass from Lindsay for a second-quarter touchdown, his fifth career score, against the Wildcats. For most folks, thatd rate as a pretty big play, but for Howell its almost subpar: His first four career touchdown catches went for 55, 65, 67 and 63 yards.

THE SERIES Oklahoma State and Texas A&M will meet Saturday for the 15th time, and the Aggies hold a 10-4 overall lead in the series and a 5-1 edge in College Station. The Cowboys will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak to the Aggies, who have won each game between the schools since the inception of the Big 12 Conference. Prior to 1996, the Big 12s inaugural season, OSU had won three of the last four meetings, winning in 1988, 1983 and 1954 and losing in 1981. In Big 12 play, the series has been competitive: OSU led 13-10 at halftime in 1996 but suffered three second-half turnovers en route to a 38-19 loss, in 1997, the Cowboys held a 22-7 fourth-quarter lead only to see A&M win 28-25 in overtime, and last year, OSU recorded the first two scores but lost 17-6 in Stillwater.
COACH R.C. SLOCUM Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum is poised to join the exclusive fraternity of college head coaches who reached 100 career victories in their 11th season or sooner. Only seven head coaches have reached the century mark that quickly, and just four have done it since 1960. After the first seven games of 1999, Slocums record stands at 99-30-2.
LAST YEARS MEETING Victimizing OSU with a slew of third-down conversions, the eighth-ranked Aggies earned a 17-6 victory while holding OSU to season lows in points and yards (172). A&M converted 11 of 21 third-down opportunities while OSU went 0-for-12 in those situations. Tailback Nathan Simmons turned in an impressive performance in a losing effort, gaining 105 yards on 20 rushing carries.
