Pokes Home for Three Straight After playing two of its first three games on the road, Oklahoma State returns to Lewis Field this week where the Cowboys will play host to Northwestern State of Louisiana. The game against Northwestern State replaces the Sept. 15 game against Northern Arizona that was canceled. Kickoff Saturday is set for 7:05 p.m. It is the first of three-straight home games for the Cowboys. OSU hosts Missouri on Oct. 6 before completing the homestand on Oct. 13 against nationally ranked Texas.
Three Straight Somewhat Rare Oklahoma State was originally scheduled to be off this week, but will play Northwestern State in the first of three-straight home games. This marks just the second time since 1988 Oklahoma State has had more than two-straight home games during the course of a regular season. In 1997, OSU played five straight on Lewis Field (Fresno State, Northeast Louisiana, Texas, Colorado and Missouri) winning four of the five. Before 1997, you have to go back to 1988 when the Pokes opened the season with back-to-back-to-back home games against Miami (Ohio), Texas A&M and Tulsa.
OSU-Northwestern State, Quickly Oklahoma State will go into Saturday night's game with an overall record of 1-2 and a Big 12 Conference record of 0-1. The Cowboys lost their league opener last week by a 21-7 count at Texas A&M. Northwestern State will come to Stillwater with a perfect 3-0 record. The Demons defeated Southern, 30-21, in their opener, and followed that with a 55-17 win over Henderson State. The Demons upended TCU last weekend in Ft. Worth by a 27-24 margin in overtime. Saturday's stop in Stillwater is the second of four-straight road games for Northwestern State.
Check Those Tickets Game tickets from the Northern Arizona game will be honored at this week's game against Northwestern State. Individual game tickets for all OSU home games are available at the Athletic Ticket Office on the north side of the OSU Athletic Center. OSU vs. 1-AA Saturday's game will pit OSU against a 1-AA opponent for the seventh time since 1990. The Cowboys are 7-0 against 1-AA teams during that period, with all but one of those victories coming at home. OSU's 31-14 win over Northern Illinois in 1994 was on the road. Southwest Missouri State has been Oklahoma State's most frequent 1-AA opponent. The Cowboys and Bears have met three times since 1993. OSU's closest call against a 1-AA foe came against SMS in 1996. It took overtime for the Pokes to claim a 23-20 win. The last seven games against 1-AA opponents are below:
Sept. 9, 2000 Southwest Texas W 23-0 Stillwater
Aug. 31, 1996 Southwest Missouri State W 23-20 OT Stillwater
Sept. 16, 1995 Southwest Missouri State W 35-7 Stillwater
Sept. 1, 1994 Northern Illinois W 31-14 Dekalb, Ill.
Sept. 11, 1993 Southwest Missouri State W 45-7 Stillwater
Sept. 5, 1992 Indiana State W 35-3 Stillwater
Sept. 15, 1990 Northern Iowa W 33-23 Stillwater
Northwestern State a Talented Opponent Oklahoma State's football opponent Saturday night will come to town with a lot of talent and the momentum from winning three straight, including an overtime victory at TCU last week. The Demons were ranked 24th in last week's 1-AA Top 25, and should make a significant jump in those rankings this week. Success has certainly been no stranger for the Demons. Northwestern State fashioned a 6-5 record on the field last year, and the Demons are just three seasons removed from an 11-3 record in 1998 and the Southland Conference championship. The last time Northwestern State faced an opponent from the Big 12 Conference was 1998 when the Demons lost to Missouri in Columbia by a 35-13 margin.
