The win came in front of a season high 3,581 fans at Reynolds Stadium as the Pokes improved to 35-13 overall and 14-8 in the Big 12. Texas lost its third straight game and dropped to 34-20 overall and 17-11 in conference play. The win propelled the Cowboys into fourth place in the Big 12 standings, .027 percentage points ahead of the Longhorns
The Cowboys loaded the bases in the second inning and scored a run when Lamont Matthews grounded into a double play that plated Josh Holliday from third.
OSU loaded the bases again in the third before shortstop Billy Gasparino blasted a grand slam homer, his team leading 21st dinger of the season, to give the Pokes a 5-0 lead.
Texas rallied in the fifth when left fielder Mike Pumo hit a solo homer to cut the OSU lead to 5-1. The Longhorns scored two more runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the score at 5-5. Jeff Ontiveros and Sam Anderson recorded RBI hits off of Cowboy starter Matt Smith in the sixth while shortstop Jason Moore added a RBI in the seventh off of OSU reliever Ryan Herrmann.
Smith pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out five before leaving the game with a 5-3 lead. Herrmann came into the game in the seventh and gave up three runs in one and a third innings of work with one strikeout. He was the pitcher of record when the Cowboys rallied in the seventh and improved to 3-2 this season.
Rusty Rushing came into the contest with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth inning and closed out the Longhorns for the final inning and a third to record his fourth save of the year.
McCullough's three RBI triple was his third hit of the night as the senior from Frederick, Okla., finished 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Cowboys and Longhorns will meet in the second game of the series tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Thom Dreier is scheduled to pitch for the Pokes while Scott Dunn will start for UT.
