Cowboys Edge Sooners 6-5, Win Series
April 08, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
OSU took the Bedlam series for the first time in two years and improved to 34-13 overall and 13-8 in Big 12 play. The Sooners fell to 24-25 and 8-16 in conference action.
The Cowboys took advantage of OU third baseman Tommy Whiteman's throwing error in the first inning to score three unearned runs. Jay McCullough and Carls Gautreaux each collected RBI hits in the inning off of Sooner starter Michael Bradbury.
OSU knocked Bradbury out of the game in the third with four hits and three runs in the inning. Gasparino hit a solo homer to left field and was followed by consecutive doubles by Josh Holliday and Jay McCullough. McCullough advanced to third on a groundout by Gautreaux and would score off of Lamont Matthews RBI single to right to give the Pokes a 6-0 lead.
OU got on the board in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly by Casey Bookout and scored two more in the fifth off of RBI singles by Dave Van Horn and Bobby Walters to cut the lead to 6-3.
Sooner pitcher Rocky Cherry, who relieved Bradbury in the third, kept OU in the game with five and a third innings of one-hit shutout ball and recorded a career-high seven strikeouts.
Cowboy starter Thom Dreier got into trouble in the eighth as Oklahoma scored a run off a RBI single by Richard Park to cut the OSU lead to 6-4. Trevor Leu relieved Dreier with one out and a man on first and second. Leu got second baseman Sean Murphy to ground into a fielder's choice after Gasparino's throwing attempt at a double play got by first baseman Jay McCullough allowing the Sooner runner to score from second. The inning ended on the same play when catcher Ryan Budde gunned down Park who attempted to go to second on the Gasparino miscue.
Leu retired the Sooners in order in the ninth to record his first save of the season. Dreier picked up the win and moved to 6-3 on the season.
OSU will be back in action this weekend against Texas in a key Big 12 series match up. Friday's game is scheduled for a 8 p.m. start followed by a 7 p.m. Saturday tilt and a 1 p.m. Sunday finale.
