Colorado Downs Cowboys Behind Detmer
April 08, 2003 | Cowboy Football
Detmer completed 21-of-31 passes, including touchdowns of 25 yards to Chris Anderson and 62 yards to Rae Carruth in the first quarter and 22 yards to Phil Savoy in the second. Carruth had six catches for a career-high 166 yards.
"It felt good to get things going again," Detmer said. "I got in a good groove tonight. It's been a couple of games since that's happened."
Lendon Henry, subbing for the suspended Herchell Troutman, rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as Colorado improved to 4-1, 2-0 in the Big 12 North Division.
"I'm very pleased with the way the defense played when Oklahoma State got down into the red zone," said Buffaloes coach Rick Neuheisel. "I was very pleased with the throwing game for the most part. We had some dropped balls, otherwise it would have been a really, really sensational throwing night. I think we made improvement and it's something to build on as we get ready for Kansas next week in Lawrence."
Troutman and 11 other players were suspended for long-distance telephone access code violations. Troutman and seven others served their suspensions in this game. Receiver Marcus Stiggers, safety Tavon Cooper and tailback Dwayne Cherrington will sit out next week's game at Kansas.
Detmer's TD toss to Savoy put the Buffaloes ahead at halftime, 21-10. Oklahoma State (3-3, 0-3 Big 12 South) drove to the Colorado 19 midway through the third quarter before Rosga picked off Tone' Jones' pass in the middle of the end zone and brought it all the way back. It would have set a school record as a 105-yard return, but a change in NCAA record-keeping lists all end-zone interception returns as 100 yards.
"It was a sensational play. Certainly, we needed it," said Neuheisel. "As he was coming out of the end zone, I was saying, `Gosh, he should have taken a knee.' But as he got out to the 15, I thought, `Great decision, Ros.' "
"I wasn't thinking at all. If I was, I'd probably wouldn't have brought it out of the end zone," Rosga said. "Adrenaline probably got me the last 50 yards. Once I brought it out of the end zone, I was just hoping to make it to the 20."
Oklahoma State, coming off a 71-14 loss at Texas, got a 12-yard touchdown run by David Thompson and a pair of field goals from Tim Sydnes, including a 55-yarder in the third quarter.
"Their speed was too much for us to handle," said OSU coach Bob Simmons. "I thought our defense played well and if we don't throw the interception in the second half, we are still in it."
Jones was 17-for-28 for 195 yards with two interceptions. Thompson rushed for 90 yards on 26 carries. The Cowboys had the edge in time of possession, but the Buffaloes outgained them, 402 yards to 218.
"We are 3-3 and now wew go home and have to re-evaluate our goals," Simmons said. "Overall, I think the defense played pretty decent. A lot of their patterns are timed and if we don't break on the ball, well ... "
Colorado has won the last eight meetings and leads the all-time series, 23-15-1. The Cowboys have not beaten the Buffaloes since 1988.
