TCU Rallies to Beat Oklahoma State 5-4
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys (12-7) had a 4-2 advantage over the Horned Frogs but could not sustain the lead and lost for the second time this season in the ninth. TCU (12-12) had three hits in the inning and scored two runs to tie the game at 4-4. With one out and runners on second and third, sophomore Stu Hunt came into the game and struck out the only batter he faced. Hunt's strikeout pitch was wild and got behind catcher Josh Holliday allowing the TCU runner to score from third base.
Oklahoma State was no-hit for seven innings and trailed 2-1 before Jimbo McAuliff lined a single to right center with one out off of reliever Shaun Wooley. Rightfielder Lamont Matthews followed with a two-run homer to left center which gave the Pokes a 3-2 advantage after eight.
The Cowboys added an insurance run in the top of the ninth off a RBI squeeze bunt by Holliday before TCU mounted its comeback.
Starter Dale Pearson hurled four innings of shutout ball and left the game with an 1-0 advantage. Junior Denny New came in and allowed two runs in three innings while striking out four. Freshman Ryan Herrmann (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season as the winning run was charged to him.
Oklahoma State will be back in action at home this weekend against Big 12 foe Iowa State. The Cowboys and Cyclones will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. each day.
